Windy is not a nautical chart app. So it’s obvious that you need to get the right charts, paper or electronic, to plan a trip at sea. To ensure particularly that you have enough water depth under your keel.
Windy provides the weather forecasts. By using the Distance&planning feature you can plot your route, select the Boat option and get the weather forecasts along your path.
For example, one of my sailing trips several years ago...
In Windy plugins you will find a sophisticated tool, the Passage Planner plugin, that plots the best route according to expected weather conditions predicted by the models available in Windy. It is designed primarily for sailboats.
However, this plugin does not provide water depth data; it is not intended for navigation in the immediate vicinity of the coast.

I am happy to share that I have published my first plugin for the Windy platform, which I enjoy using very much.

The plugin is called Wind & Solar Power Forecast, and it is designed to estimate short-term power generation for wind power plants and solar power plants directly on the Windy map.

The main purpose of this plugin is to use Windy weather model data to create estimated power generation curves for renewable energy plants. Users can add wind and solar plants on the map, define installed capacity and coordinates, and then generate forecast results based on available meteorological model data.

Main Features

Add wind power plants and solar power plants on the Windy map

Forecast using ECMWF, ICON, or both models

15-minute interpolated generation forecast

MW and MWh display modes

Interactive plant-based charts

CSV/TSV export for forecast results

Polygon-based area definition for solar power plants

Detailed wind turbine modeling with turbine coordinates, hub height and capacity

OpenStreetMap power grid overlay

Live OSM/Overpass queries and offline country datasets

GeoJSON/KML import and export

Turkish and English UI support

How to Use

Open the plugin on Windy.

Go to the Plants tab and add a new wind power plant or solar power plant.

Enter the plant name, installed capacity, latitude/longitude and technology-specific parameters.

For solar power plants, you can optionally draw a polygon representing the plant area.

For wind power plants, you can optionally define individual turbine coordinates, hub height, capacity and turbine parameters.

Go to the Forecast tab and select ECMWF, ICON, or Both.

Run the forecast to view MW/MWh charts and tabular results.

Export the results as CSV/TSV, or back up plant data as KML/TSV.

In Settings, you can also enable the OpenStreetMap power grid layer to inspect nearby electrical infrastructure.

Important Note

This plugin is not a SCADA system, an official production forecasting system, a commercial-grade or bankable energy assessment tool, or certified engineering software.

The results may be affected by Windy layer availability, selected weather model, browser performance, and terrain/elevation. Forecast outputs should be considered approximate and mainly intended for planning, visualization and analysis.

Possible Future Development

If there is interest from the community, I would like to continue improving the plugin with additional forecasting and analysis features.

Some possible future development ideas are:

Short-term solar power ramp-up and ramp-down analysis caused by cloud movement and sudden cloud cover changes

Better short-term solar production forecasting by using cloud cover, irradiance and temperature changes more dynamically

Improved wind power forecasting using higher-resolution local sampling, such as maximum 9×9 km or 7×7 km grid-based analysis where available

Wind forecast correction using elevation data, terrain effects and turbine hub-height calculations

More detailed wind turbine-level aggregation for wind farms

Better comparison between ECMWF and ICON model outputs

Additional export formats and reporting options

More advanced OpenStreetMap power grid filtering and visualization features

Performance improvements for large plant lists and large offline power grid datasets

Feedback and Contributions

Feedback from users testing the plugin would be very valuable.

Please feel free to contact me under this forum topic for bug reports, missing features, improvement ideas or usage feedback.

I would especially appreciate feedback on:

Forecast performance in different regions

ECMWF / ICON model comparison

Wind turbine-based modeling workflow

Solar polygon workflow

Accuracy and usability of the OSM power grid layer

CSV/KML/GeoJSON export needs

UI, mobile usage and performance issues

Ideas for future forecasting improvements

Thank you,

Quick progress update for anyone following along. Thanks to everyone who's tried it and sent notes — a lot of this came straight from tester feedback.
What's new since the original post:

Fuel & wind-adjusted range. Enter your fuel on board and see how far you can actually reach along the route — a reachable-area ring that accounts for winds aloft, plus a "reserve point" marking where you'd hit your 1-hour reserve.
Much-improved icing. A tester compared the plugin's vertical profile against a trusted reference on a real winter route and found it was over-calling "severe." He was right — I rebuilt the icing model so temperature (not just humidity) drives severity, validated it against that case plus several North American winter routes, and reserved "severe" for genuine freezing-rain setups. Far fewer false alarms now.
Smarter cruise-altitude recommendations. They now stay within each aircraft's normal operating altitudes — no more suggesting 4,000 ft for a turboprop or the service ceiling for a piston.
Compare Days weighs hazards by how severe they are, how much of the route they cover, and whether they sit at your cruise altitude — so a single patch of weather no longer tanks a day's rating.
Smoother fuel entry and a few other refinements from tester reports.

Still a free private beta, installed via Windy developer mode. Desktop browsers and Safari on iPad are supported. Beta page (install steps + the full aviation disclaimer): https://snickitybit.com/software/windy-ifr-plugin/
Decision support only — not a substitute for an official briefing, charts, NOTAMs, ATC clearance, or pilot judgment.
I'd still love more pilots testing real routes, especially around icing and altitude calls. Thanks!

I tried the Bavaria 46 polar and my own polar, both give these types of TWA's of between 15 and 25 degrees.

Have you tried the Passage planner plugin?
It offers several routes, but these are the best (fastest) routes according to the different models of your choice.
But if you want to compare a route A with a route B that you draw yourself, I think the best way is to keep a screenshot of each of these routes in the Route planner (unless someone make a special plugin…).

I would like to express my deep appreciation for the functionality of the Windy application. As a flight instructor at a flying school in Thailand, I am highly impressed by its capabilities and its immense value as a tool for flight planning.

I am actively seeking effective flight planning solutions that incorporate reliable weather information. Such tools are essential for both initial route planning and in-flight re-planning when weather conditions change. While there are several dedicated aviation applications available, many require expensive subscriptions that can be a significant barrier for student pilots.

To address this, I have developed a plugin for Windy that displays relevant Thailand airspace information, including TMAs, Restricted Areas, and Danger Areas.

Key Features:

Airspace Overlays: Toggle-able layers for all Thai aviation zones with interactive labels.

Custom Route Drawing: A specialized tool to drop waypoints and plan a flight path directly on the map in high-visibility magenta.

GPX Integration: Ability to import pre-planned .gpx routes to visualize them against live weather data.

This provides users with a clear operational overview of their intended flight path, enhancing their ability to anticipate weather impacts and make safer aeronautical decisions. I believe this plugin provides a cost-effective, high-utility solution for the Thai aviation community.

I have published version 1.2.3 to npm and would appreciate your consideration in adding it to the official Windy Plugin Gallery.

Technical Details:

Plugin Name: windy-plugin-thailand-airspace
