3D option disappeared

The globe option needs to be brought back seeing how wether patterns and different kinds of gas carbon, sulferdioxid, ozone and dust move around the globe is important. People would use it more if it was shown at the top of everything else

@klima235
That is the key point. Furthermore, who wants to visualise anymore the plane projection where on upper latitudes it is all distorted? -
@marienka I was just about to suggest for a 3D view (didn't know there was such a feature). Viewing the map on a 3D projection (sphere instead of flat) gives the best understanding of the meteorological patterns IMHO.
-
I didn't even know that there was a 3D view, damn that would have been cool
-
I also wanted to suggest 3d mode. Can't believe it existed in the past but was removed. Current projection is really horrible for Northern latitudes and makes weather systems look disproportional. I really hope 3d will be added back at some point in the future or other type of dynamic projection will be implemented. Thank you.

I am very disappointed! I was always wondering if you had hidden the globe view on purpose because it would use more CPU. 3D view was the reason I was using windy (ok and the wind animation but other tools started having that one too). Finally a possibility to view world weather in its real shape. I created screenshots from poles and equator views to check if the thing with Hadley cells etc. could actually be seen in real life and it was way more chaotic but awesome. Please bring 3D view back!

Can this functionality be added back as a Windy Plugin maybe?

I think thats a shame to remove the 3D option, it was the reason why I got attracted to windy.com in the first place. The weather patterns and jet streams change a lot these years in the arctic, and it is impossible to follow these changes now with the current projection because polar areas are extremely distorted. Maybe there are few users living and looking at the polar regions, however it is nonetheless areas that are very important to understand in the times of climate change. I hope you will re-consider and must say that with the 3d option disappearing windy.com is much less attractive.

I heard the flat earth theory is a thing this year...
-
@krnlg "The 3D option was very well hidden so it isn't surprising it wasn't well used." That's the point! Some years ago, 3D could be enabled directly on the homepage. 2D is boring. http://www.meteoearth.com is my new favourite.
-
I am very disappointed to see the 3D view option gone after silently disappearing from mobile. It was the only meaningful way to view the polar areas and now in European winter time I'll miss this resource dearly. I hope it will be back in some form but I'm not holding my breath.
I appreciate all the work that goes into making windy.com available for free but I don't feel we're getting the whole story as to why it was removed. I was excited to see you are accepting donations but now I'm not at all sure what will be the future of windy.com and I feel I'll have to start looking elsewhere for great meteoroligical visualisations.
-
you removed the most interesting view of windy.com. Yes, your numbers may have been low only because it was so hidden. But once I found I could not get enough in watching the streams in real shape. PLEASE put it back on!
-
Didn't even realise 3D was available. What a pity.
-
Wow..I'm disappointed too. Windyty 3D was the only app I could find that used to allow me to 'chase' airflow to/from the poles when mixed with the altitude parameter. It was an absolutely amazing feature that you should have promoted over the 2D version. We are not a flat Earth society after all ! ;-) Please think about bring it back and making it easier to find. It was so hidden that most people would not have just found it. Likely the reason it was used so little. It should have been the default.
-
Please bring it back. My first use of Windy was in 3D and like so many others, I found it essential to a global perspective. It was unique and uniquely effective.
-
I think this is a feature that should be reintroduced. As plugins continue to be written and the ways to evolve the data into visualization - 3D is standing in your way from turning really good into great. I cannot think of another WMS browser that decided to punt 3D due to lack of demand. If it was decided on a statistical preview of the site, then I would consider possibly relocating or changing the UI to accommodate it. There are a few things actually if you're gonna go that far... Maybe increase the amount of screen by closing/fading/hiding the right bar and left bar more compact - it's huge! That's a lot of screen real estate even on a tablet which that 3D feature could once again shine... (wink wink)
-
@Marienka its a yes please from me, but understand the software issues, as I have a friend who write code for programs....however if you ever get bored then please :)
-
I have been using Windy for years already and I was just about to request that it would be nice if you added a "google earth" type of a globe view as Mercator projection is awfull near the polar regions. Trying to find a feedback channel I happened to notice the discussion chain about "3D". Only then I learnt that you did have that feature at some point! I never knew about it. So sad. You guys did a really poor job in promoting the feature to the users. IMHO 3D should be the default and Mercator (or any other projection) should be optional.
Please bring it back.

@krnlg said in 3D option disappeared:

I'm 100% agree, never knew there was such possibility. Even I was wondering when are you going to launch that feature.
Hope you might decide to turn back on that decision.Best regards

@Marienka, in my opinion it was removed to avoid the general public understand what is really occuring in the ARTIC and ANTARTIC; not convenient at all for those in the global warming agenda
