Nanmadol downgrades to tropical storm category after Sunday's landfall in the south of Japan. Based on all forecast models, typhoon continues to central Japan. Although Nanmadol has weakened, it still brings heavy rains as it goes throughout Japan. More than 300,000 households have been left without power, and at least 17 people were injured.

Typhoon Nanmadol made landfall near Kagoshima, south of Kyushu. Millions of people are evacuating. Heavy flooding and landslides are expected.

After the recent typhoon Hinnamnor, another typhoon named Nanmadol is bearing down on Japan and South Korea. Although Hinnamnor made landfall in South Korea and had a big impact on the weather in the west of Japan, Nanmadol is the opposite.

The typhoon is currently reaching wind speeds around 200 km/h (cat. 4) and a pressure of 965 hPa and has the potential to cause damage mainly due to strong winds and heavy rains.

Landfall of Nanmadol is forecasted for Sunday afternoon on the southwest coast of Japan (GMT+9, Tokyo), by this time, it should downgrade to cat. 1 or 2., depends on the forecast model (JAM vs. ECMWF)

Threats

The JMA is warning people in low-lying areas such as near coastlines and river mouths about potential flooding caused by high waves.

The JMA is also calling on people in south Kyushu to be on their guard against landslides and swollen rivers on Sept. 16, as some areas there recently received heavy rainfall before Typhoon Nanmadol developed.
