<![CDATA[How to add your webcam to Windy]]>_center

Join the Windy community and make your webcam available to worldwide audience.

There are 2 options to add a camera to Windy.com, depending on your camera brand, your skills and network options.

1. Directly

Windy servers need permanent access to the latest snapshot (not video) of your webcam using image URL address. To do so, you need to:

  1. Make camera IP address accessible from the internet:
  • Have public IP address for your network
  • Set port-forwarding in your router
  1. Have a supported camera (see below)
  2. Submit a camera to Windy via this form and wait for approval

You can add views to your webcam during the submission process, they identify what area the webcam captures and will also determine what category and title is assigned to each webcam.

What happens after submission?

Once you submit your webcam application, we will review your webcam and test if downloading data on regular daily basis is possible, therefore it is important to provide us with a correct image URL. Webcam approval usually takes a few days.

If approved, you will be notified about the successful submission and your webcam will go live!

I can make my webcam broadcast live on a URL (website). Do I understand you correctly and will that indeed be sufficient for having it on windy.com?

At the top of this topic I read “ Windy servers need permanent access to the latest snapshot (not video) of your webcam using image URL address”.

I read this as: my webcam should not broadcast a video continuously on my URL, but I should have a system that makes a snapshot once every hour, publish that snapshot on my URL, and have that snapshot updated every hour. I have no clue how to take care of that…

I would like to add my webcam to windy.com and found this manual. However the manual is quite basic and does not mention the details that I need to successfully setup my webcam for Windy.com.

Therefore I was wondering if there is a more detailed manual somewhere?

For example, the current basic manual says: “Windy servers need permanent access to the latest snapshot (not video) of your webcam using image URL address”.

Does this mean that my webcam has to store a snapshot to a website/url every hour, to begin with? In that case this is probably a whole manual by itself…..

I saw a link, suggesting we can now add WebCams to Windy. So I spent quite a bit of time tracking down a good WebCam for a small town near me, and filled out the form. When I got to the final part, there was a checkbox to confirm I'm the owner of the WebCams. well I'm not, because it's a publicly available image. So I wasted a bunch of time and couldn't add anything.

It would help if you said right up front that you can only add WebCams that you operate yourself.
