New Zealand radar service

I also noticed you guys added New Caledonia as @idefix37 had suggested
Yes It's works. But there is no radar image in North of New Caledonia island. This is because the radar antenna has been destroyed in 2019 by tropical cyclone Oma.

Nice! I'll definitely be testing this daily from now on.
THANKS! to all of the Windy Team :)
-
Japan's weather radar hasn't been working the last few days on Windy :(

Please post a new separate topic if you are still having issues. Japan's radar is not relevant to NZ's radar.

@motorcycle Hello, we will look into this. Thank you for report.

Not sure if the Windy NZ Radar maight be having some issues but the image seems quite different to what is available from Rainviewer and the MetService NZ (source). Please see the screenshots to follow:

@jmh2002 Hello, our radar seems aligned with the Rainviewer now.

Are you sure? For me the radar for NZ still sometimes shows "no data" and consistently shows the radar image with "lines" like indicated in example number 3 in your post here https://community.windy.com/topic/10732/weather-radar-with-lines-and-radar-availability/2?_=1594720632201 suggesting "Interference of radar connection, so we show the last image taken before the cut"
Below is the previous image again for reference.
I'd appreciate if you can please check the NZ radar again please, thanks :)

@jmh2002
Hi, Jason
We see these ‘’lines’’ quite often in France and in UK. As far as I understand, they are not due to radar interference, but because the last image from the radar provider is not received in time to be included in the loop. So it is the previous image, but with stripes, which is shown. It take a long time to get images from down under :-)
(I’m joking as we get the same in Europe).EDIT: In New Zealand radar, it is not only the last image in the loop which is missing, but sometime several.
-
Yes, I took the quote and the word "interference" from Korina's post in the other thread but I assumed it meant a problem with the connection to receive the radar data? (and that's what it looks like).
We had clear skies for a couple of weeks but we have rain for a few days this week so that's why I'm checking on it.
The same problem still seems to exist today.
Also I think the problem is more than just displaying the 'last image with stripes'.
The amount of precipation activity shown on the radar is nowhere near correct compared to Rainviewer or the source: MetService NZ (links above in previous posts).
It seems like the data is not being received / computed / displayed correctly.
-
I would say from checking out the MetService, Windy and Rainviewer that indeed they do look pretty similar.
It's great we finally have something for NZ again, but it is a major bummer that the radar images only update every hour or so instead of every 8 minutes as they do on MetService (and I think that time frame is industry standard).
I'm not sure if this is a limitation of their API @Korina? If it is I can try to email them and bug them about this.

Are you sure? Please double check my screenshots on page 1. Yes the general outline is similar but the definition is not even close.
It's not meant to be like that. if you zoom out and look at another country you can make a better comparison to how it should look.
It seems like there won't be much rain to see on the radar over the weekend but from Monday it should be raining again - good for testing if not for the beach :)
-
Hi, the NZ radar has been down on Windy for nearly week now. Are we able to get this fixed?
-
@devonport Hello, it was a temporary outage, the NZ radar is working now.
-
@korina Awesome, thanks for letting us know it's back online.
Next step, we need the MetService to allow for more than one radar image per hour. Not very useful for radar interpretation as it stands. And it looks bad when you zoom out and see all the Aussie radar animating nicely. There is a friendly NZ vs Aus competition down here, so maybe I should email them using that comparison to get them motivated. :)
-
Has anything been done regarding this? I just arrived back from Europe and had a great animated weather radar there, while radar imagery for NZ doesn't even move when i press play, or moves one frame throughout the whole animation. Looking at Oz it looks the same as it looked in Europe.
Weird that this is still causing issues.
-
@jaka-jerele Unfortunately there is nothing Windy can do from what I understand (well other than pay the exorbitant fees the MetService charges, that I'm guessing do not make business sense).
Now that you are back in the NZ I think you best bet is to start writing to your local government representative to express your concerns.
In my opinion meteorlogical information should be mostly free / public domain as it is in many places around the world. Hopefully New Zealand can change, but it likely won't unless the public ask for it.
-
@onetrev Hi, as @Jaka-Jerele mentioned, we do not have better radar data for New Zealand at the moment; the current update time of radar images is 1 hour.
-
@onetrev That's actually a good idea and I'll definitely make contact.
I agree meteo information like this should be free, however, I'm not even remotely surprised there are people in NZ who would charge enormous fees for it
