How to make map timelines?

So, map timelines, like youtube maps of the world over time. I have been curious about this for some time, but what kind of software do people use to make things? I would like to create a map of the world every year krogerfeedback from, say, 2500 b.c. or something. Does anyone know what software is best for that kind of thing? Preferably at no cost, but not picky.
