how to turn off fire icons

I've not found a way to turn off/on the fire icons and there's something about seeing a fire icon in the middle of a rainstorm that makes me want to turn it off. I have "active fires" set to off, but that hasn't changed the fire icons and I don't see any other choices relating to fires. I must be missing something...

In the desktop version, just click on the small cross in low right corner of your screen:
