Android 10 - Widget not updating

Hi,
I've a OnePlus 7T Pro running Android 10. I've the Windy Days Forecast 4X2 widget installed but it will only update if I manually click the refresh icon on the top right of the widget. Is this how the widget is supposed to work? If so I'm afraid I'll have to revert to YR or another app which has real time (or close to real time) auto updating widgets.
Would appreciate any help you guys can give me if there's a solution for getting the widget to work as it suits my needs better than any other app and I'm paying the annual Windy Premium fee as a result.
FYI I've turned off battery optimisation for the app in the phone settings so that shouldn't be the cause of the widget not updating.
