Until recently, there was only one SO2 source, GEOS-5, which was very useful and relevant.

Now I see two SO2 sources: CAMS and GEOS-5. But GEOS-5 now seems to be non-functional.

Also, the CAMS output seems to be considerately different from the GEOS-5. For example, the most heavily SO2-polluted region on Earth, around Norilsk Russia, shows very little SO2 on CAMS. Conversely, CAMS shows the entire western part of the Pacific Ocean as the most heavily polluted SO2 region, whereas GEOS-5 showed very little there (as I recall).
The reporting units are different too. CAMS shows mg/m^2 (which I believe is the cross-section density of a sample vertical column. GEOS-5 reported μg/m^3. Globally they do not seem to correlate very well.

What is going on here? And when can we expect to see GEOS-5 working again?

Hello @af4ex GEOS-5 shows 'surface SO2', CAMS shows sulphur dioxide from the ground and up to the top of the atmosphere and it's expressed in kg/m2.

GEOS-5 is unavailable for SO2 layer at the moment. If we collect enough feedback, we would bring it back.

Petra, thank you for the explanation. I hope Windy will restore the GOES-5 link soon.
I would still like to know why CAMS shows so much SO2 in the West Pacific.

BTW your CAMS display shows SO2 in mg/m2, not kg/m2.

@af4ex "CAMS forecasts of total column sulphur dioxide show a large plume, originally from the eruption of the Nishinoshima volcano, trapped in a low pressure system over the Pacific Ocean."

              Hello, Windy-air quality SO2-layer (CAMS-data) shows mg/m2 ,- is this ok?

Is there someone outside which could explain how such SO2-values could be translated into microgram/m3 ?

Please explain based on an example,- thanks in advance.

@af4ex , i would agree to the comment,
@petra-pik would be great to bring back, restore the GOES-5 link.
