Fronts
-
Hello my name is thanos, I’d like to ask you if you could add fronts? Like cold fronds worm fronts.. It would be very helpful and unique! Thank you very much!

@koukgr
Windy visualizes only weather models data and these models are NOT able to draw fronts. They are drawn usually by meteorologists so there is no solution at the moment to display fronts on Windy. -
@koukgr
As explained by @idefix37, there is no way for Windy to draw fronts. There are websites where fronts are drawn tha you can use.
Having said that, there are alternatives to visualise fronts that you can use with Windy. One way is to use the humidity map at 700 hPa. A front is materialised at this altitude with a humidity above 90%. Another way, combined with the humidity map is the temperature map at 850hPa. Ideally we should use the potential temperature (thêta’w) but still it can give you an idea of the temperatures differences between air massa so in fact discontinuity which is the sign of a front.
Again, those 2 maps don’t replace fronts map but it works quite well -
I am certain that with all the amazing data and visualisation that windy has and is using, drawing in fronts and troughs etc would be actually quite easy!?
If meteorologists can do it - so can a program!! It just takes someone who is able to write the code to take the existing data and use it to create the fronts etc.
Windy staff - your thoughts on this would be great!

@tazmike Hello, as mentioned above, Windy visualizes data based on local and global weather models. Fronts are drawn by meteorologists and are not included in any model dataset.

@idefix37 temperatures. temperature patterns. jet stream. jet stream follow ups / outs / stuff whatever turns up. what I mean is they have those lines with contour numbers on them of Goddamnit and if it's below a certain number it snows especially on high ground. This indicates some type of warm front may have suddenly turned up and caused the frozen rain to snow. for eg. so that's it - weather patterns show where the fronts might be and where they are colliding and scrapping/fighting with each other, so stuff like that. That was it - clouds. Check out the cloud cover because they are sometimes at the front of the fronts as it were and tailing off at the tails. Dunno for sure.

Weather fronts seem to be sorely missing for a site with so much relevant weatherand it is a paid site at that and quite expensice to boot Fronts are essential in weather. since windy has nearly every concievable thing included how can they miss that? Just purchase it and include it from aviation weather NWS

@idefix37
Well surely you have meteorologists on staff, draw some fronts! shouldn't have to say it, but, duh... :)
I've yet to see a dynamically animated weather front map. And I'm sure a one can extrapolate the boundary, and you could be the first to have real-time fronts. That would be cool!
Yes no model is going to show fronts, because they're kind of opinions. But regardless, a certain amount of Ingenuity can give us what we want, from the best weather app in the entire universe. -
@buckaroomichael
Windy have no meteorologist in their staff. And as you imagine it, that would be a hard job to draw fronts 4 times a day, on the overall globe, with a hourly time stamp to get the animation you want, for, let say, the next 5 days. Today it’s just a dream.The Royal Institute of Meteorology in Belgium do it but only for Western Europe

In this post, above, I give some ideas to visualize fronts with Windy. You can start by doing it, combine with what @idefix37 suggested you to do -
@yves70. Is there any reason why a computer can not draw fronts? It is very repetitive so a Computer algorithm should be able to do it.
-
@cswarm34
Today, the role of meteorologists is still crucial to draw fronts. We need their expertise to do it even if AI and computer can propose something like here : https://www.nwcsaf.org/asii1
But the products are not yet very accurate -
@cswarm34
To complete my previous post, you can understand that if the institutes making weather models as ECMWF cannot propose something powerful to draw fronts, Windy cannot do it as well ! -
@yves70 Thank you for the suggestion!
-
@idefix37 blue windy is able to draw fronts.why red one isn't?
-
And which is the total area covered by the front map they display ?
-
Not to complain about the lack of fronts available. After all, your service is free and wonderful! However I do note that WUnderground.com provides this, with frequent updates. So it IS possible.
