Track Vendée Globe progress on Windy.com

@rittels
Do you mean the polars of each boat sailing the Vendée Globe? I don’t think there are available. What is available are the polars of a ‘standard’ IMOCA class boat. -
@kbsali
Hi Kevin, it seems you have added a 'future best track' for each boat probably plotted by a routing software. Which one do you use?
That's very useful and interesting to see the boats surfing on strong winds associated with roaring forties depressions. -
Hi @idefix37
Well spotted, I should have announced it here too (only did it over twitter this morning).
Yes : new version available with 3 days routing predictions loaded when you open the info popup of a boat.
This is provided by squid and is based on the GFS model (I need to check if we can preselect "GFS" instead of "ECMWF" :)) -
@kbsali
Personally I prefer to keep the wind map as forecast by the ECMWF, even if the routing track is based on GFS. -
@idefix37 ah ok, why is that?
-
@kbsali
There are more details in wind field even at Gale or Storm level weather. But if you prefer to preselect GFS when loading your plugin, why not if it is possible to switch back to ECMWF. And with GFS as default model for the plugin, it would obviously be more consistent -
@kbsali
Hello, a small issue that other users have probably noted : the routing track is not updated at same time as the boat position.The 2 black points on the routing track are the predicted position at 12h, 24h lapse time?

Yes, and unfortunately I cannot do much about it. I will try to get the "routing based on report date XXX" together so we can better explain the issue. Note that I have added the report date in the infobox on the bottom-left.
The 2 black points on the routing track are the predicted position at 12h, 24h lapse time?
the routing are for the next ~73h, and the dots are added every ~24h (mouse hover the dot and it will show). I couldn't find a better way to show that info (so far). Any suggestion? :)

thanks for the great plugin, @kbsali.
any chance you can show the routing of ALL boats when I move the date slider forwards?
-
Hi @justinlimbo ,
I have just published v1.2.0 with quite some changes : it now shows a sidebar on the left with the current ranking and check boxes for each boat, allowing you to select which route you want to display. (because of a bug i'm still fighting against, I had to disable the "uncheck" option, so once a route is selected you cannot hide it unless you refresh the page and the plugin.

Fantastic, thank you :)

Great job !!

@kbsali this doesn't look right - it should be the 11:00 UTC ranking. Could it be applying my local timezone offset? I'm in UTC -8. Loaded regadata v1.2.3.
-
@fogmachine
Hi, the UTC time seems correct for me, but the date is in French despite I've selected English. Are date and time linked to the user location? UTC time should be independent from location. -
@idefix37 What time zone are you in?
-
@fogmachine
UTC +1 -
your plugin gets better and better. thanks for that, @kbsali.
any chance you can display the course and relative position of the course record of Armel Le Cleac'h in 2016/2017 and maybe even the one of François Gabart in 2012/2013?
-
@kbsali With Firefox the report time is still not right in v1.2.4 - maybe it's due to
formattedDatetime = "".concat(reportDatetime.toLocaleTimeString(undefined, dtOptions));
which isn't converting from
timeZone: "Europe/Paris",
to UTC. With Safari it's note working at all, reporting "Invalid Date UTC" - this might be because I didn't allow windy location access.
-
@fogmachine thanks for helping it out this! :)
I'll have a look into it over the weekend, but you are correct the timezone seems to be incorrect and depends on your browser's setting. I do not think not allowing to share your location causes the bug though. -
Either regadata or windy is having trouble drawing the Squid routing across the anti-meridian. You're in good company - qtVLM, OpenCPN, and some of the routing sw onboard the current VG racers have also had problems here.
