Can I rely on its Hurricane Detector?
-
Hi,
Being a sailor, please advise if the Windy's hurricane detector works close to accurate? -
@deliacm
Windy does not show a Hurricane Detector but a Hurricane Tracker, which is a bit different.
When a hurricane is in the list of the Windy Hurricane Tracker, that is because official services like the NHC has announced an existing tropical storm or a hurricane, with its position and past path. So Windy just relays the NHC advisory.
But additionally Windy offers an interesting feature: the Wind accumulation. The name is a bit strange, in fact it is the field of maximum gusts forecast during several days. It allows you to detect a future hurricane but this is just a prediction by a weather model that you can compare to NHC advisories at the end.

Hi,
Thank you for the suggestion. Does this Hurricane Tracker show close to accurate reading. Can we rely on it while sailing for weeks in the ocean? -
@deliacm
The trajectory of tropical storms or hurricanes predicted by ECMWF model is quite good. I observed it frequently.But this model, like the other global models, is not so good at predicting the maximum wind speed near the eye of hurricanes. In any case it is better to rely on NHC advisories.
As you foresee long passage of several weeks, do you get broadband internet connection at sea, or do you stop every 2 or 3 days by calling at ports or mooring areas ?
