Windy.com introduces soaring forecast
-
@harry-medlicott Hello, the thermal heights relate to AMSL (above mean sea level).
-
@korina
The Thermal feature is a great addition to the site although being a hangglider/paraglider/sailplane pilot this thermal feature by itself even with the cloud icons is not enough for a subscription. BUT if you would like to get a ton of freeflying pilot subscribers I would suggest adding an XC planning feature comparable to Flyxc.app or seeyou planner and combine it with windy weather. I understand you are a pilot, where do you plan your XC flights? -
@zwawe I am not a pilot, but some of our member are. Thank you for suggestion :)

Awesome feature, looks amazing. Just need to wait for thermals to come to UK, then we test it :-)

Can you share some details about how this layer is computed?
We, soaring pilots usually keen to know at least some technical details to judge error margin and other factors not included in computation. (morning inversion, fog, humidity, rain several day before flight day etc).I was trying to use this feature this season and I am looking into it right now as my friends are flying in Australia. Cloudbase though seems world wide overly optimistic.
Without deeper knowledge its hard to help you tune the layer so other pilots can reliably use it.

@polachp Hello, please see the reply from the developer itself -https://community.windy.com/topic/16458/windy-com-introduces-soaring-forecast/26
We are open to discussion and feedbacks. -
@filip_k Hello, Korina forwared me to you so:

I am active pilot, keen to help you if you wish.

@polachp Hello, as mentioned in the reply, we would like to keep the technical details to ourselves at the moment.

Sorry , I haven't noticed the direct response about details. Thank you for your answer.

Love the idea but (I fly Gliders and Hang Gliders) but the implementation is not great. It looks more like a plot of cloud cover and not clear what the numbers mean. There are 3 things which would be useful on this plot
-
Height of convection (Ft ASL/AGL)
-
best expected strength of convection (Ft/min)
-
Shear/Buoyancy ratio
That would be useful. If you want to see what good looks like have a look at the RASP forecast website.
Nice site overall through, I use it all the time for general forecasts and love the Site Alerts.
Thanks

HI THERE! I'M PARAGLIDING IN GREECE AND THE "THERMAL" INDICATOR IS VERY IMPORTANT.... I'LL TRY IT AND THEN LET YOU KNOW THE RESULTS...
THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORTS

Bonjour, la fonction Arôme a été supprimé, hors j'ai pris l'abonnement prenium exprès pour celle-ci, habitant en France, c'est la plus précise. Comptez-vous la remettre svp ??

@audrey-j
La diffusion des prévisions par AROME est interrompue pour mise a jour des formats de fichiers par Météo France:https://mf-models-on-aws.org/#arome-france-hd/v2/
Ce modèle devrait être à nouveau disponible sur Windy début février.
-
Good idea. Go further than that. Must see.
-
Ich finde Windy.com voll super Dankeschön für diese Arbeit!!!
-
Really love the new THERMAL setting - thanks ...PS: I'm both a Paraglider pilot and a Sailplane pilot!

Where do we see the legend for colors ?

Great Feature I am a Glider and Paraglider Pilot and this is great. I think precision will improve with the time

Thermals is good. Do you a Front (cold warm stationary) layer?
