Windy.com introduces soaring forecast
-
@korina - I'm really pleased to see this feature being added.
Just looking at it this morning, its a bit too coarse to be useful to a soaring pilot. Its telling me, for example, that a broad area over central California will have 6 knt thermals today in the afternoon. Its smoothed from the coast to the Sierra Mtns. Here's a screenshot showing the current prediction for thermals:

Experience and other tools tell me (1) there is cloud in some areas today, (2) thermal lift is rarely or never smoothly distributed from coast to mountains like that and (3) its not going to be that strong. Here's a screenshot from Skysight showing what's more likely to be seen for thermal distribution and strength today.
Maybe there's no practical way to use better resolution and produce more localized predictions, but something more like the above Skysight image is what glider pilots would hope to see.

@klssoaring It's not 6knt - the layer shows top of lift (meters or ft)
-
This looks really useful, will it be possible to indicate thermal strength as well as forecast height?
-
@skydog We plan to improve the layer as time goes by:)
-
@opelvivaro Thank you :)
-
@luscombe8e Hi, thank you for the feedback. We will try to tune it up.
-
@khalilahli Hi, colors of the layer Thermals can be modified here - https://www.windy.com/colors?ccl,50.080,14.505,5

@korina
A very good idea for us glider pilots!
I will be soon a subscriber, when I understand how to add to my Italian account of Windy.
Tristano Gargiulo -
Dear Sirs, I subscribed just now Windy Premium in order to have added to my menu soaring forecast and thermals, but I have a version in Italian and I cannot find and open in NUVOLE (which corresponds, I suppose, to CLOUD GROUPS) the button MORE LAYERS so to add THERMALS to my selection, which at present shows only: NUVOLE BASSE / BASE NUVOLOSA / VISIBILITA'.
May you kindly help me?
Another question: may I download the same app on my Android cell with tha same features?
Thank you
Tristano Gargiulo

@korina Hey there guys. Just want to say firstly that it is an awesome program - well done. As a large scale model it is absolutely unrivaled. But as for the soaring forecast it just doesnt scale small enough for accurate readings - it is nothing compared to skysight and XC-skies - those are the benchmark programs to go for so Im not getting any value from it. But if it becomes more accurate on a smaller scale I would be the first to stand in line. :)

@wild2fly do longer flights ?
-
@tristano Hello, if you don't see Thermals in your layer selection, then you will need to add it from the layer menu by clicking on "More layers..".
-
Hi I have premium membership but can’t get the thermal on my iPad app
-
@billyfisher
It will be probably available in the app too.
But now you can get it via your browser on iPad as shown on mine:May be necessary to find it in More layers...
-
@billyfisher Hello, as @idefix37 mentioned, Thermals are not yet available for iOS, but you can view them in via browser.
-
Nice feature, very appreciated by a glider pilot!
-
Next layer has now to be airspace, then a possibility to plan a XC route and export with QRCOde or similar, to the most flight instruments out there.
-
@korina many thanks did not see that hopefully it will be available in IOS soon
-
@robbie-hilltop Thank you for suggestion. Airspaces are already available via plugin Airspaces.

Hi. Great idea about thermals but need much more info for paragliders and sail planes. Will be niece if t-skew drawings or sounding will be better quality. Some glider pilots they can read and relay on this form of information's. Basically all info which is included in dr. Jack RASP blip map forecast is very helpful. As a active paraglider pilot more often I look on Windy forecast because of presents fresh data (wind directions and strength) is on one page. Now are included thermals parameters and this is great.
Regards for all Windy team.Pawel
