Currents vs tidal currents
-
Hello,
Is it possible to clarify « currents »? Do we need to add tidal currents to obtain the global currents?
Best regards

Hi Stéphane
Currents is supposed to include Tidal currents. It is quite clear when you look at Currents in the English Channel.
As said by Copernicus, ‘’ocean current product combines the 3 main components of surface ocean currents: general circulation, tides and waves’’. (waves because they are driven by winds as the currents are too).

This product has been developed by Mercator Ocean.

Tidal currents is based on sea surface altimetry, and is probably underestimated in some areas and so needs some care for navigation.
