I really appreciate the 3D mode and features for someone who lives off-grid, the information can be significant. What I do not like is the futurecast is only -1- hour, not entirely practical for our situation. 4 hour would be very good.

Please, could you explain a little more what you mean by ‘futurecast is only 1-hour, 4 hour would be very good’ ?
Does that means, with the mobile app, you still have on your screen the weather map at time when you get off-line and you would like to keep in cache the forecast for the next 4 hours.
I’ll say that for the next 4 days it would even be better, for people going at sea. For only one layer of course.

We are excited to announce the return of 3D mode to Windy.com. Although standard mercator map can be useful tool for detailed weather observations and forecasting, 3D mode can give you the "big picture".

            What is new:

            • 3D Globe displays all the weather layers, except Radar, Satellite and Weather warnings
            • Maximum zoom is set to an equivalent of 6 on 2D Windy
            • 3D Globe is being released only for desktop, mobile version will come later
            • Favorites are included, but other POI features are excluded from the first BETA version

Access the 3D Globe by clicking on "3D" button under your profile picture.

            _center

The missing features and elements will be gradually implemented in next development phases and the existing ones will be improved.

3D Globe is being released in Beta version, available for all our users. In the later stages, 3D Globe will be part of Windy Premium only.

Enjoy and let us know what you think!

This is a fantastic feature, and it seens to be working very well. I would just sugest the implementation of an automatic switch mode, between 2D and 3D depending of the zoom level used.

I do not like it. Wind animations, too slow and bulky, makes the computer look and feel slow. The "missing" elements are already available on 2D. Yet you guys want to charge for those elements to Premium paid members only. Because of these two things, I will NOT be using your return of 3D. Thanks, but no thanks!! 2D is still best!!

@richard514 Yes, the site is still free; it's the FULL version of 3D that won't be. I found THAT disappointing, but you can still have all you want in 2D. You can still go ahead and promote the site. I myself do NOT like 3D; it has slow, bulky wind animations, the mouse feels draggy and the computer "feels" slow. If you ignore 3D, you will like the current Windy with all its' features. I am sure new free ones will get added to the site in the months, years, decades ahead. Enjoy your traditional 2D Windy!!

@weatherfan Hello, the slow animation might be connected to your hardware. Nevertheless, thanks for feedback.

Windy just keeps getting better and better. I do like this 3D Beta for my inquisitive needs to get the bigger world view. I'll continue to check it out regularly.

If you can be anything in this world, be kind.

                                Greetings!

The 3D is much better for showing my students the proper perspective of the large scale meteorological features. I now use both the 2D for the high resolution views by zooming in and the weather forecasts from the different models, although I prefer to call them simulations. I think the general public gets a better idea of what they are by saying simulation. It's not someone walking down a runways showing off the new bathing ware.

It's a great product and very instructive as well as entertaining,

This is very exciting to me. What a great view. So far all features work as stated -- although I haven't tried to break it.

There is a problem with the night shading in the forecasts for individual towns and cities by day 5. Areas that are shaded to show night time are covering day time icons. It gets worse farther into the future.

Also a meteorological suggestion. You list high, medium and low clouds. To be meteorologically correct it should be high, middle and low clouds. There are no medium clouds.

Love the the 3D! Another parameter that would be of interest is vertical motion forecasts, showing where the air is moving up and down.

You list high, medium and low clouds.

You may be right, but the ECMWF call this parameter ‘medium-level cloud cover (MCC)’ :
                                            https://www.ecmwf.int/en/forecasts/charts/catalogue/medium-clouds?facets=undefined&time=2021110700,0,2021110700&projection=classical_arctic
Showing this model, Windy uses the same name.

I do not see why ‘There is a problem with the night shading in the forecasts for individual towns and cities by day 5’.
From day 5 the model provides a 3-hour step forecast instead of 1-hour. This makes the day length ‘visually’ shorter.
