Which weather model for Japan should we add next?
-
I'd vote for Japan Meteorological Agency's Global Spectrum Model (GSM). This is a global model with a resolution of 0.1875 degrees (approximately 20 km).
This way it benefits both Japanese locals and also global forecasters.

Hi Korina,
May I know how to display the specific position below this weather picker? I have this features before but now, it's gone already.

@michille Try this in Settings:

Great idea and glad to hear this may happen. I use windy a lot for forecasting southern Japan and finf it very useful. If you could add JMA model data, that would be fantastic. I hope this happens as our forecasting office would find this extremely useful. Thanks!
-
@anthony10 ....I agree.
If the option is available, I would like an additional global model (JMA GSM) made accessible for the global community.

Japan METARs and TAFs are available from:

Please add to the airports modeling for Japan it would me SO helpful!
Thanks!

GSM would be awesome. But for the Japanese market, MSM is probably better.

I do not understand what you mean. I have not said that there is something wrong with Japan. I've said that Japan is a mountainous country and it would be better to offer a weather model performing well in this environment. -

I would recommend to add SwissHD 4x4 weather model if it is possible. 😊

The question was ‘Which weather model for Japan should we add next?’
The model that you mention is not available for Japan. -
Korina, Could you update us on your progress adding a more accurate model for Japan? Windy’s data presentation is great but its forecasts for Japan are currently not even close. Thanks.
-
@ChristopherJLa Hello, once we have a better idea about the new potential model, we will let you know.

@idefix37 If I am to check weather information of Japan, I would usually use sites like https://weathernews.jp/ and https://tenki.jp/ which offer a lot more layers of information than Windy. For example, they provide forecast maps of spread of allergy-triggering pollen, the time of sakura blossom and when the leaves turn red, apparent temperature, seasonal forecast, easiness to observe starry sky, flash rain warning, upcoming hours radar forecast, and so on.
p.s. talking about mountainous area, I think Taiwan and Luzon and South Korea around the area also have somewhat comparable terrain despite different in each of their own ways. If a model of its kind is to be adopted I think these area should also be considered.

The question was ‘which weather model for Japan should we add next’. Nothing else. The features offered by your promoted weather apps are not provided by weather models. -
@Korina Amazing work! I would suggest including the JTWC tropical model track in the Western Pacific as this seems to be more accurate than the models that are currently included. JMA shows a significant bias towards Japan and the European models have not been verifying well with TY02W MAWAR. https://www.metoc.navy.mil/jtwc/jtwc.html. Thank you and keep up the great work.

Hi Korina, thanks for thinking of adding models for Japan. We, hikers and alpine climbers in Japan, use SCW as the most trusted source of weather forecast though its UX is a nightmare. It provides weather forecast in several time ranges, the longest being 264 hours. Great if you could check out SCW to see what data sources they are leveraging. Looking forward to more to come in Windy!

Thank you for thinking about adding models for Japan. I wonder if it is possible to add several models such as JMA’s LFL, MSM, GSM because each model has different Delivery frequency, Forecast Time and Grid. I’m very grateful for your work and look forward to more in the future!
