Startup location “use GPS” never works correctly (yes, location permissions are ON while using; Windy thinks I am in Texas, when I am actually in Nova Scotia).

I am constantly traveling by boat. It would be most convenient if Windy could startup centered on the same location I was viewing in the “previous session”. Ideally the zoom would also be the same. This would avoid the hassle of repositioning and re-zooming at EVERY startup, and prevent needlessly loading data over very slow internet connection for the wrong location.

      Thank you!

@jeschman Hello, what is your Windy version and OS version please? Have you tried to determine the location by IP address?

@korina I just tried setting to determine location by IP, and the startup location is still very, very wrong (by several thousand miles).

I am on IOS 14.7.1, Windy version 31.1.0

@jeschman I have the same thing almost every time I open the app. Shows my location on the map here in Australia about 1000kms away from where I actually am. Rather annoying

@JustinS8 @jeschman Hello, does is also happen in the Weather radar layer if you select "Find my location"?

@justins8 It will occasionally show my location as correct , but more often than not it's way off

@korina I just tried it, and find location seems to work correctly (accurate position) in weather radar mode. Still not working, ever, at startup however.

As I mentioned, a “previous location” (and ideally, zoom) startup setting would be really helpful!

@coconino @jeschman @JustinS8 Hello, in case your phone does not have access to GPS, it can use IP address instead, causing a wrong location.

For iOS, we recommend to have location services turned on together with option "Precise location".

@korina my iPad DOES have “access to GPS”. It has an accurate GPS fix, which I am using frequently for navigation. The problem is that WINDY does not use this location when starting up.

@coconino Hello, you should find it in Settings (iOS) - Privacy - Location Services - Windy.com - Precise location switch.

@korina I checked settings, and I already have precise location enabled for Windy. However, here’s a clue…

I had first opened Windy, and as usual, it started in the wrong location (the startup location changes.. it’s not always in the same spot, but it is never on my true location). Then, when I went to check settings, I saw this (see attached screenshot). The gray location arrow means that Windy has used my location in the past 24 hours, but has not used it “recently”. That is, Windy did not access my location when I opened the app.

                              It’s a bug.

@jeschman Hello, is your iPad wifi-based or it does have cellular? The issue could be that wifi-only iPad does not have access GPS, so they show the IP address location instead.

@coconino I would recommend checking if you have set 'Use GPS' as your Startup location in the Menu > Settings and allowed the application to use your device's location.

We will be releasing a new version of the application. Let us know if the issue persists once you have the new version.
