Long-lived hurricane Larry made landfall near South East Bight, on the island of Newfoundland, on Saturday early morning. The storm brought hurricane-force winds, heavy rain and pounding sea.

Larry is now moving north-northeast at 47 mph with maximum winds of 80 mph.

The hurricane caused power outages for thousands of people over parts of Canada. The system will still generate large swells over the next few days. As the wells will affect coastal waters along the Atlantic coast of the United States, large waves, powerful breakers and strong rip currents will result.

Update: 10th of September, 8:00 a.m. UTC

Hurricane Larry is on track to move across parts of southeastern Newfoundland Friday night or early Saturday morning and bring high waves, torrential rain and coastal flooding.

Once Larry reaches colder Canadian waters, it is expected to quickly downgrade to hurricane-force post-tropical cyclone.

The centre of the storm is expected to track over Avalon Peninsula. Main threats are high winds that could reach up to 80 mph over the area and rainfall up to 50 millimetres.

Emergency plans are already in place to ensure safety of the province's most vulnerable residents.

Update: 9th of September, 1:00 p.m. UTC

Larry still remains a powerful hurricane, however it has weakened into Category 2 on Wednesday. Maximum winds are 100 mph.

Hurricane should maintain its northwestward movement and continue producing large swells resulting in dangerous rip currents affecting the U.S. East Coast.

Larry is forecasted to pass about 200 miles to the east of Bermuda today while remaining at Category 2 strength. Tropical storm conditions are expected today along with coastal flooding. Wind gusts are forecast to be between 30 and 50 mph.

Update: 8th of September, 8:00 a.m. UTC

Larry remains a forceful hurricane of Category 3 with sustainable winds 115 mph. However even though Larry is located well out in the Atlantic, it produces significant swells that will impact much of the East Coast through this week.

The biggest impact will be rip currents for much of the coastline along the Carolinas. High surf up to 6 feet is expected.

Bermuda Impacts

Larry is forecasted to pass east of Bermuda on Thursday and cause tropical storm conditions with risk of heavy rainfall and flooding. The Bermuda Weather Service has already issued a tropical storm watch.
