Wrong Location
-
Hello @erpreciso, thank you for your report.
We are aware that some users experience this bug and currently working on a solution.
I would recommend checking if you have set 'Use GPS' as your Startup location in the Menu > Settings and allowed the application to use your device's location.
Meanwhile, you can set a location that you previously marked Favorite, as your Startup location.

Same problem here, located in the south of Denmark, bookmarked my location, set Windy to use GPS for start-up location, but it consistently sets my GPS-location to either one of two larger cities about 30 km's away. Using GPS data is allowed (when app is in use). Using "Find my location" in the menu doesn't help.

@bob-lublawe Thank you for input, we are working on a fix.
-
@petra-pik thanks petra and @Korina , "Use GPS" at startup is selected, and the app is allowed to use GPS (I have only the option "while using the app"). As a patch I am doing as suggested, setting my current location as favorite and then startup with that favorite, but I am in the middle of a on-the-road trip (lucky me) so missing the GPS option is slightly annoying. Looking forward for a fix and keep up the good work.

Same here, being logged in as a "premium member" the page doesn't store my favored location and jumps back to the default IP address setting.
Not only that, but also in "Layers" if I blank out waves / air quality and a whole bunch of others they are just back when I revisit the page.
It seems that only a few things are stored in the cloud, but the bulk of my preferences are not :-(
A bit of a pain in the butt of the else excellent webpage ...
Hope that it can be resolved soon ..... -
Update to my comment above: browsing through the forum I've seen this "not-storing-in-the-cloud" problem already reported back in 2019 !
It's either not solvable or nothing gets done about it ??
Please Windy report the latest status ...... -
@sjælland Hello, settings such as start-up location should always be saved to your account. When you select "Determine by GPS" in your profile and revisit the settings later, the start-up location changes to "determine by IP"? Or was that just one time thing.
The same goes for selected layers in the menu.
-
@korina Thank you for your reply.
When in logged in, in "settings", regardless which location I select (in my case a nearby town), after having officially logged out, closing Firefox 92.0.1 (Mac OS 10.12.6) after logging back into Windy the location is back to: "determined by IP address".
The same happens when I blank-out, on the right-hand side of the screen in "layers", a whole bunch of layers which I don't require like swell, NO2, waves, water-temperature, snow etc etc, they only stay as long as I'm logged in. As soon as I log-out and log back in, my selection is gone and everything is back to the "standard" lay-out (including back to the IP location)
The only layers which seems to be saved and do stay after having logged out and back in again are the few selected layers in the bottom right-hand side of the screen (for example selected wind-speed in m/s instead of knots)
So only a very few personalized options do get saved, however the bulk of my selections just disappear after having logged out.
Unless that I make a mistake, that there is a "save" button to save my selected location and preferred layers, but if the program is mend to save these things automatically; apart from a few exceptions, it doesn't work on my computer.
Please let me know if I've to clarify more or if I'm making a mistake?
With kind regards: sjælland. -
@sjælland @Korina @petra-pik thanks for the activity on this post, however I understand @Sjælland problem is more about saving settings in the cloud and across devices, rather than the wrong location detected by the app, either at startup or using "Find my Location", that I understand is experienced also by @Bob-Lublawe and other users in other threads. Thanks.

Your selection of layers is not really saved in the cloud. So next time you open Windy, you get the default list of layers. There is only the parameters shown in the Settings menu which are saved, including units.
-
@erpreciso @Sjælland Yes, the layers are not part of the cloud, they are not saved there, but your browser should remember the selection in cache. However the Start-up location is saved to cloud.
Have you tried to update your Firefox to the latest version?
-
@idefix37 I don't have any problem with layers or setting in the cloud; I love the app and the functionalities, and all seems working as expected.
My problem is the wrong location: I am currently in Perpignan (France) and "Find my location" detect Marseille (France), 200km East. Is the problem clear, and are you working on a solution, or should I open a new thread since it seems this one is used for everything except the original post' issue?
Many thanks.

@erpreciso Hello, we are aware that some users experience issues with location determination and we are working on fixing it.
For now, I would suggest to try reinstalling the app, checking that you have allowed Windy to use your location and selecting option "determine by GPS" in the app's settings.

@erpreciso said in Wrong Location:

My post about saving settings was addressed to you too just because you were referring to @Sjælland post.
There is apparently a problem with user location, OK. But You can save Perpignan as favorite. Of course it is one click more to display the local weather.

@Korina @erpreciso
First of all I'm sorry if I hijacked a thread but the header covered partialy my problem and so, instead of opening another thread containing also "wrong location", perhaps due to other reasons, I used this one ;-) Perhaps it was the "wrong location" :-)))
Yes I'm using the latest Firefox 93.0.
I do now understand that the layers preferences, despite what is written completely at the bottom of the folded-open layers-menu, are not saved in the Cloud but in the browsers cache.
I think that's were the problem lays as my Firefox settings are such that Firefox deletes cookies, site-data and caches upon Firefox closure.
Whether this also influences the location-settings, I don't know. Even with the latest Firefox the location setting goes back to the IP location instead of the selected preferred town.
It has to be noted however that this problem of not saving the location exist (only?) on my Macbook (Sierra 10.12.6, Firefox 93.0) but not on my iPhone App. I guess closing the App on an iPhone does not wipe out caches. If deemed required we can continue this discussion in another thread; please advice ......

@sjælland Hello, the selected layers are only saved to the local storage of a browser on your computer. If you have a settings that deletes all the site data, that is likely the reason you have issues.
Layers are not saved to the cloud, we will remove this text. -
Seeing this as well, but only in Android widgets. Opening the app or refreshing the widgets manually will correct the location error. I live in south metro Atlanta, but it will routinely claim that I'm in Sandy Springs, GA or, as of today, Central Florida.
Running version 33.0.2 on a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3

@rhc098 Hello, what Android version do you have please?

@korina Android 11 with September patch

@rhc098 Thank you for details, we are investigating the issue.
