      For those interested in the regular improvements of weather models, ECMWF, the European Center for Medium Range Forecasts, announces a new version, the 47r3 cycle, of its high resolution model called IFS. This model is the one used and visualized in Windy. These changes are said to be one of the most significant of the past 10 years.

        I just read through the article and there are a lot of exciting new upgrades/changes coming!

        Do we know when 47r3 will become fully operational and also when we'll see those new forecasts within Windy?

          @anthony10

          AFAIK the cycle 47r3 is now operational. Its implementation by ECMWF should take place today.

            Does this mean it will be higher resolution? And will there be more accurate thunderstorm forecasting?

              @liam-pankhurst
              The resolution is not changed.
              I don’t know if the thunderstorms forecast is really improved, but convective rains seem to be more precise in term of precipitation rates and area coverage. So what they call the ‘Moist Physics’ package could improve, may be, thunderstorms prediction too.

                Buenas tardes,

                ¿Actualmente en Windy ya disponemos de los pronósticos proporcionados por el nuevo ciclo? ¿O todavía estamos con el ciclo anterior?

                Gracias,

                Saludos

                  ECMWF model is computed in the new cycle since October 13, runtime 06h UTC, and provided as such to all consumers see here.

                  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
