Forecasting weather in mountains is tricky and high-resolution models are a must.

Therefore we are proud to publish a new 2,2 km high-resolution model ICON-D2 from German DWD. It covers the whole German territory, Benelux, Switzerland, Austria, and parts of the other neighbouring countries, especially Czechia, which is where Windy is developed.

All three models: ICON, ICON-EU and ICON-D2 are very good models and provide excellent results, so we are excited to use ICON-D2 for planning our Alpine adventures.

More info about ICON-D2 can be found on its official site: https://www.dwd.de/EN/ourservices/nwp_forecast_data/nwp_forecast_data.html

ICON-D2 is available just on desktop now and we hope to implement the model in Android and iOS apps soon.

Let us know how do you like the new model.

        @ivo delighted!

I already primed all my ballooning fellows on this - ICON-D2 is the best model for us in central Europe for flight forecasts

and my farmer neighbours.. I taught some of them to use windy and they are getting pretty good at bringing home the hey before the rain sets in;)

          Dear Ivo and team,

thanks a lot for integrating this modell.

          DWD writes
"Based on model runs at 00, 06, 09, 12, 15, 18 and 21 UTC, ICON-D2 provides new 27-hour forecasts every 3 hours. The model run at 03 UTC even covers a forecast period of 45 hours."

          Currently, Windy tells me
          "Updated 6h ago (ref 06Z)
Next update expected at: 03:28 PM, in 0h 58m 5s
          Update interval: 6 - 7 hrs
          Reference time: 2021-11-10T06:00:00Z"

          Could you please explain?

          Best regards, Daniel

@flachkurbler Hello, we are currently showing only 00, 06, 12, 18 runs. All of them cover forecast for 48 hours. This DWD info is outdated. ICON-D2 was extended to 48hours in the end of June (see page 7 https://www.dwd.de/SharedDocs/downloads/DE/modelldokumentationen/nwv/icon/icon_dbbeschr_aktuell.pdf?view=nasPublication&nn=13934).

From the daily work that this ICON-D2 is a very good model, very exact in detailed forecasts. Many thanks to implement it here...

Congratulations: especially for ballon pilots a very useful extension because of solid wind prediction.

Very nice! Thank you for adding the ICON-D2 model to Windy.
Is it possible to set this as the default weather model whenever I use Windy?
Currently I always have to switch from ECMWF (default) to my preferred weather forecast model. This would be really convenient.
Looking forward to the iOS App update to get ICON-D2 to my smartphone as well.

@ibender70 Hi, we are happy that you like it!
Currently the default model is ECMWF, it is not possible to set a different one.

@korina Yes, I know that the ECMWF is currently the default.
But, is it planned that this can be changed by the user in future releases? This would be really helpful. Changing the weather model every time I use Windy is not really convenient.
Is there any special reason why the ECMWF weather model is the hardcoded default? Why not let the user decide?

@ibender70 We may add this option in future releases.

@krieggus Hi, glad to you it. ICON-D2 is european model, therefore it is not available in South America.

@krieggus This weather model has been created by "Deutsche Wetterdienst" (DWD). The German Weather Service is a federal authority in the division of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure.
So this model has been developed especially for Germany and some of their neighbor countries close to Germany.
So, you see, because of that it will most likely never be available for any other regions.

If you want another model than ECMWF when you start Windy,
delete your shortcut that takes you to Windy homepage. Than chose the model you want, and the location you want. Then save this as a shortcut. Next time you open Windy it will open with the new model. If you want another model or/and location just repeat.

                                            It is a good suggestion.
