Windy launches high-resolution forecast model ICON-D2 (2.2km)
-
Congratulations: especially for ballon pilots a very useful extension because of solid wind prediction.
-
Very nice! Thank you for adding the ICON-D2 model to Windy.
Is it possible to set this as the default weather model whenever I use Windy?
Currently I always have to switch from ECMWF (default) to my preferred weather forecast model. This would be really convenient.
Looking forward to the iOS App update to get ICON-D2 to my smartphone as well. -
@ibender70 Hi, we are happy that you like it!
Currently the default model is ECMWF, it is not possible to set a different one. -
@korina Yes, I know that the ECMWF is currently the default.
But, is it planned that this can be changed by the user in future releases? This would be really helpful. Changing the weather model every time I use Windy is not really convenient.
Is there any special reason why the ECMWF weather model is the hardcoded default? Why not let the user decide? -
@ibender70 We may add this option in future releases.

@ivo Hi, is there any chance that this Forecast will be available for South America (especificaly Argentina). Thanks, and I realy enjoy your app, never get wet in my bike anymore 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
-
@krieggus Hi, glad to you it. ICON-D2 is european model, therefore it is not available in South America.
-
@krieggus This weather model has been created by "Deutsche Wetterdienst" (DWD). The German Weather Service is a federal authority in the division of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure.
So this model has been developed especially for Germany and some of their neighbor countries close to Germany.
So, you see, because of that it will most likely never be available for any other regions. -
Hi. Were you planning to make it available globally? or also in Asia at least? Thanks!
-
@youricast
This model only covers part of Europe

If you want another model than ECMWF when you start Windy,
delete your shortcut that takes you to Windy homepage. Than chose the model you want, and the location you want. Then save this as a shortcut. Next time you open Windy it will open with the new model. If you want another model or/and location just repeat. -
@ivo Excellent, thanks a lot!
-
Well done... More preciesly..
-
Congratulations! Good work.
Implement the same for Asia-Pacific region.

More disaster is happening in Asia - Pacific region.
It is a good suggestion.
All the best!Dr.Ebe

The domain of ICON-D2 developed by the German center DWD, is Central Europe as shown above. Windy just visualises the model data provided by this weather center and therefore cannot extend it to other areas.
The only possibility to see a high-resolution model for Asia-Pacific region is to find a suitable one developed by a weather center. Do you know any model that would fit your needs? -
Great news! Do you think a high-res model will ever be developed for the Rocky Mountain region of N. America?
-
Do you plan to use ICON-D2 data to forecast 'Clouds base', 'Cloud tops', 'Thunderstorms' and 'Visibility'? These are the ones that pose the most interest for pilots :)
-
@igor-320 Hello, these parameters are included in the ICON-D2 data set, so we cannot display them.
-
@ibender70 Same request from me. Would love to set ICON-D2 default both in browser and in app.
