      The fog map for US Gulf Coast does not reflect the fog conditions. I have monitored it for months and it is never correct

        Weather models are not very performing at predicting fog.
        In addition to the fog layer, you can look at Meteogram.
        For example, fog is predicted in New Orleans area but not near Mobile. But the Meteogram at this location shows a chance of low cloud close to ground and may be fog.

        At same location the forecast sounding (right click on mouse) shows temperature and dew point equal at ground level (17°C) and so a risk of fog.

          To complete what @idefix37 said above, check also the wind speed. To get fog, wind speed should be very low such as 5 to 10km/h maximum
