Adding Canadian GEM/CMC (2.5 km resolution) to current weather models
-
Hello … first off, let me say how much I like what windy.com offers. I am a Premium subscriber, and am also happy that you have added “Thermals” (I have found it to be useful, but a forecast thermal strength for the same location would also be very helpful).
Would it be possible for you to add the Canadian GEM/CMC (2.5 km resolution) forecast to the Forecast Models already contained within windy.com? Canada is the second largest country by area (3,855,100 square miles/9,984,670 square kilometres) and it would be of great value to be able to view another weather model when trying to assess the likely future weather in a particular area or along a specific route. It would also be great to to be able to compare the GEM/CMC model to the current models used by windy.com.
Thanks.

@geraldashcroft Hello, we are happy that you enjoy the new features!
Adding new models is definitely not out of the question, we will consider your suggestion. -
@korina I would add my support to adding the Canadian / GEM Model to your list of choices, as it is considered a very good alternative to the Euro/GFS. For example, I heard one prominent meteorologist during the most recent "NorthEaster" winter storm say that if the Canadian and Euro agree with one another, its time to take what the models are forecasting seriously.
(There is also a regional model of the GEM/CMC called the RDPS. It would be similar to the NAM).

@korina
I agree, we need more forecast models for Canada/USA.
I believe the models the author is talking about are the following:
High Resolution Deterministic Prediction Systems (HRDPS) (2.5km, 2 days).
Regional Deterministic Prediction Systems (RDPS) (10km, 3.5 days).
Global Deterministic Prediction System (GDPS) (15km, 10 days). These are really good models that are used a lot in Canada/USA.
I don't think the GDPS would be very useful, but RDPS and HRDPS would be great to compare with ECMWF and NAM for medium and short term forcasting.
Thanks! -

@korina - I would also love to have the Canadian models included in windy. I also live in BC Canada.
I’ve seen a lot of avalanche forecasters utilizing the European, US, and Canadian models together to check for agreement.
Thanks!
