why is the default view the forecast? I don't see anywhere to change it to be wind

Your question is a bit weird. Yes, the default view in the app or website is a forecast map, and the default map is the forecast wind. As Premium user you can choose which parameter you want (wind, temperature…) as start up page.
Do you want something else? If you need the Reported wind at weather stations you need to select it.
