Re: Problem: Wind spot forecast differs from animation

The above issue was raised in 2018, but I can't find any indication that it was resolved.

I regularly notice the same issue. The basic forecast graphic window shows a different wind direction to that of the particle animation or spot picker on the map. As far as I know, I am only looking at the ECMWF model data. I think I have switched off all layers that could be causing "interference" of different model data.

      Here is an example:

The issue appears to be more prevalent at lower wind speeds, but I have not extensively tested that.

So which prediction do I believe?

        @gavin-q

The post you refer to was showing a different issue: it was the non-synchronization between the wind model and the wave model.
In your post you report a discrepancy between the direction of the wind animation and the wind direction in the Basic meteogram.
I have try to reproduce this discrepancy, but did not succeed.
Then it seems strange that your screenshot shows the weather picker being displayed at the same time as the meteogram. Normally this picker disappears when you click the amber arrow to show the Meteogram and is replaced by a pulsing dot.

Sorry it has taken me a while to get back to this post.

This issue is not always present and so may be difficult to replicate. However, it occurs frequently enough that I am unsure whether to go paragliding or not.

The wind picker seems to stay on at the same time as the meteogram when I select one of my favourite locations.

@gavin-q Hello, what browser do you use please? Could you also provide how exactly you achieved this view, was it by selecting a favorite or just by clicking on the map?

Hi @gavin-q, can we request full-screen screenshot next time you observe the discrepancy? I've tried to replicate your issue with no luck. Are you sure you've selected wind at the surface (which is shown in the basic forecast)?

@Korina, @Filip_K: Thanks for the responses. I am using Firefox. Here is a full screen image I just generated. To remove any confusion over the use of Favourites, I just clicked on a point on the map and scrolled forwards in the forecast until I saw a divergence in the wind direction indicated by the animation and that indicated on the Basic Forecast display, at a given time. I am looking at the surface wind.

@gavin-q Hello, this screenshot does not show the issue with the picker. Nevertheless, I recommend to use Firefox without any special settings, as it may affect the functionality. Does this issue happen on other browsers too?

@gavin-q @Korina I was able to reproduce same error with clean Firefox installation (and other chrome-based browser as well)

While detail shows wind from around 260deg, picker and particles show wind from around 280deg. It might be that in low wind speeds, discrepancies between map (and picker which uses map data) and forecast detail happens.

As map data go through transformations during import (from source projection to web-mercator), slight differences happen and are most visible with low values (similar thing happens with low precipitation). Point forecast detail has slightly more accurate data while map is (due to these technical limitations) intended more for general situation overview.

I'll investigate this issue further now that I have something to lean on

@gavin-q Consider picker just a preview tool, detail forecast is much more precise. When zooming, for example, picker data change quite a lot as different data tiles are used.

                      Example (speed and direction changes):
                      closest:

Thanks for the assistance. Now that I know the detailed forecast data window is likely to be the more accurate, I will focus on that in future.

Otherwise, thanks for a great App!
