GeoColor satellite imagery competition - zoom.earth & Ventusky
-
@anthony10 It would be amazing IF Windy was the first weather provider to blend all the possible satellite operator's imagery data onto the 3D view AND obviously make it playable. No other weather provider I can think of does this. I would imagine that this would make Windy more attractive to users.
-
@anthony10 Another competitor has a great Satellite layer + controls.
Ventusky is showing our beautiful blue planet in its true colours with their satellite layer. They even have wind particle animation overlayed on the satellite view.
Come on Windy team :)
-
@Caefix It seems like NOAA have figured out how to display the distorted satellite images beautifully.
They have a real-time 3D global displaying the weather with a few other layers.
Being able to spin the global and zoom in it incredible.

@anthony10
Have you tried the visible channel in Windy? -
@anthony10 said in True satellite imagery competition - zoom.earth & Ventusky:

Yes, but ... wind particles reffer to wind at 10m.
Clouds are (usually) higher!
So, wind particles may draw wrong conclusions
about cloud movement. -
@Gkikas-LGPZ I have and while all the layers Windy provides are useful in their certain ways, having a true colour layer that shows all the different colours happening on the ground is just magic. Being able to see snow cover or flooded areas or burn areas from wild fires or algae blooms or storm coastal destruction can only really be seen via true colour.
-
@Gkikas-LGPZ that is true, I didn’t think of that. I guess if there was a clear disclaimer saying ‘particles are shows at 10m high’ would be helpful.
-
@anthony10
By comparing windy's BLU with Ventusky's Satellite (visible?)
is like comparing apples to oranges. -
@Gkikas-LGPZ I do agree but I would guess that Windy devs have sharpened the cloud imagery to help look better and if looking at cloud imagery is what some people like then that’s ok.
But it’s not the point I’m making with this post, I and I’m certainly sure others would like to see our planet in true colour.
-
@anthony10
"Visible" is not "true colour" ?
What's the diference? -
@Gkikas-LGPZ Do you mean this?
-
@anthony10 I strongly agree that Windy should switch to the GeoColor satellite product for visible imagery instead of what they use currently.
-
@mark-ingalls I’ll keep advocating for these changes. I believe both Zoom Earth and Ventusky have nailed the satellite ‘geo colour’ or ‘true colour’ (whichever is the correct term) and also NOAA with their 3D global view, it just needs playback features. Another great feature zoom earth offers is daily am/pm static images.
-
@anthony10 GeoColor is the name of the parameter in AWIPS, so I assume that's what an API call would require. I'd love the night time microphysics display to be an option too since I live in a region with frequent low stratus and fog but GeoColor is a higher priority for me.
-
@mark-ingalls Also, I'd like to see Water Vapour added to the Satellite layer.
-
@anthony10 On a similar note, I've been pushing for total precipitable water for a few years now. Hopefully someday they'll listen.
-
@mark-ingalls Lets hope if we keep this post at the top of the Feedback and Suggestion page then the dev's will know how much the community wants the satellite layering to expand. :)
-
Another visible layer I think a lot of users would like to see is an Ice/Snow layer. Similar to the Weatherzone website.

@anthony10 Alongside with an Ice/Flood/Fire satellite layer, I believe a Water Vapour layer would be very helpful for users & meteorologists.
