True satellite imagery competition - zoom.earth
-
Hi Windy team,
Another website I check for satellite imagery is https://zoom.earth/ because it has a few functions that Windy doesn't have (yet) haha
I know adding these functions into Windy would greatly help with weather forecasting and attract more users to stay within Windy for an over all experience.
Two functions that zoom.earth uses that I'd like to see Windy also add are:
1 - True colour global satellite imagery from the same sources that zoom.earth uses (NOAA GOES, JMA Himawari-8 & EUMETSAT Meteosat) that are updated every 10mins.
2 - HD satellite images produced twice daily from Suomi-NPP, and MODIS Aqua and Terra.
Hopefully we'll see these functions added into Windy in the near future?
Thank again Windy team :)

@anthony10 Hello, thank you for input. We do plan to improve satellite in the future.

@Korina Any news about implementing new satellite layers to Windy
(True Colour, Radar overlay, Ice/Flood/Fire, Enhanced Infrared etc?).I'm really excited to see Satellite added to the 3D view too.
-
@anthony10 I cannot share any details at the moment. We are currently focusing on different tasks.

@Korina Hi Korina, any news on implementing some features that https://zoom.earth/ offer into Windy?
I’m really enjoying using their true colour satellite animation which shows 3, 6, 12 & 24 hour time-lapse.
I’m also using their HD Time Machine feature that shows single day satellite images from the Aqua and Terra satellites.
Zoom Earth even has radar & satellite combined!
I’d really implore Windy team to focus on improving the Satellite component of the platform as other websites are far more ahead.
Thanks Windy Team.

@anthony10
I put Windy sat. image side by side with Zoom Earth
and I find Windy's images more detailed

I completely agree with you. I took these screenshots on Saturday. That of Windy brings much more detail to the clouds in particular. This is what we look for in a satellite image.

I’m wondering if there have been any further developments regarding the implementation of true colour imagery from Himawari in Windy’s satellite layer.
Currently, I rely on zoom.earth for Himawari’s true colour satellite images as well as daily HD images from Aqua and Terra satellites (personal preference).
Given that zoom.earth displays true colour, I’m curious if Windy could easily incorporate true colour alongside its existing layers.

🛰🗺 There´s another complication beyond the satellite-data.
Length of equator = 40000 km, tropics = 36.800 km, polar circles = 16.000 km,
Cylindrical projection needs some stretching towards the poles. So dimensions of weathersystems get distorted, too.
The sharpness is somehow like optical zoom vs digital zoom.
