NİKOMEDİA
-
Hello,
In Türkiye, while I am checking the radar and I noticed that the name of İzmit written as nikomedia as a greek name. As windy, what do you mean? Do you know what is happening between greece and Türkiye? Are you giving a message to turks? What is the explanation of this?
-
@ömer-kırcalı
In the "greek version" of Windy
is written as Izmit ! -
@gkikas-lgpz Hello,
I have checked the application again, from my location I still see nikomedia instead of İzmit. My location is İstanbul. Out of my location, my friends see izmit. I cannot catch any pattern but I guess this is related to where you are. I have checked android and apple and both seem the same (nikomedia) from my location. I do not think this is a bug but cannot understand the reason.
-
@ömer-kırcalı Hello, what language do you have Windy in? If you use Turkish, then the name should appear as Izmir. Nevertheless, we gather map data from OpenStreetMap.org, the name needs to be corrected there in order to appear correctly on Windy.
-
@korina I am using Türkçe in the android app. And It seems nikomedia as I have shared the screenshot in my first message.
When I have checked openstreetMap, It does not seems nikomedia here. On the database , some fields might be nikomedia but I do not know the backend. My point is, openstreetmap does not show the name of Kocaeli/izmit as nikomedia but windy shows.
-
@ömer-kırcalı We will correct the name with our next map update.
-
the name needs to be corrected there in order to appear correctly on Windy.
As noted at https://community.windy.com/topic/21061/wrong-place-names-not-sourced-from-openstreetmap/1 that simply isn't the case here (and in the case of most other similar issues raised with OSM).

@korina Thanks,
I have 2 questions,
1- I really wonder what is the reason that you call Kocaeli as Nikomedia. This name is from ancient ages and that does not look like a mistake from my perspective. If this is a mistake really cannot understand how this happens.
2- When is your map update. Do you have any Estimated time?
Thanks,
Ömer -
@ömer-kırcalı Hello, at the moment, we cannot state the estimated arrival of the update. But once we update the map source, the Nikomedia issue and other similar inconsistencies will be fixed.
-
@Korina After 2.5 months, still nikomedia. Has no update been done during this time?
-
@Ömer-Kırcalı
here what I still see -
@Ömer-Kırcalı Hello, we are unable to say the exact date of the update. It will not happen anytime soon.
-
@Korina After 7 months , just a City name cannot be updated from Nikomedia to Kocaeli. You could rewrite the application from the scratch during this time.
-
Hi @Ömer-Kırcalı, we are aware of these issues with map labels, etc. but we cannot do those fixed manually one after another, so a large update of the map is planned. However, we are finishing many projects at this time, so I cannot tell you when this will be done. I would appreciate your patience.

@Gkikas-LGPZ Gkiikas , please read my problem description. This occurs on some conditions that I cannot detect. Please focus on the problem to fix insted of denying.
-
@Ömer-Kırcalı
As you focus only on this town name, if you set English map labels, you get Izmir even in Turkish language. -
@idefix37 Now I experience that when "İngilizce harita etiketleri" enabled , I see as izmit. When I disable it , It seems nikomedia. I checked this from an Android or IOS device and the behaviour is same. I thougt that is related with my location. But still no pattern.
The name of the city (İzmit) has no other name such as nikomedia.

@Ömer-Kırcalı We took certain data from OpenStreetMap (Open source app) and they are used in Windy and also they probably contain certain issues with some names of cities or areas. However, at this moment, it is not that easy to take new data for replacement and also there is a risk that other names would be changed in a way, locals don't approve it. So we decide to keep it for now, since we want to focus on weather related features.
