Why is it that the wind speed shown on the app are consideribly lower than actual. Looking at the hurrican in FL it lists top speeds of 56kts i know it is much faster. I want to be able to rely on wimdy for sailing off the coast od California. Speed is almost always shown less than half actual speed. Have i done something wrong?

The global models and even the regional ones are not able to predict the max wind in the vicinity of a hurricane, but some are good at predicting its track. BTW the max sustained winds as they are used in USA for the Saffir-Simpson scale are based over 1-minute wind while the weather models provide wind forecast equivalent to 10-minutes wind.
Have you been looking at the Hurricane tracker of Windy which gives the wind forecast by the NHC?

I don’t think you are planning to sail when a hurricane is predicted. But for all conditions including gale and storm at sea, the weather models shown by Windy are really accurate. Have you tried all of them?
