How does windy make an offline weather forecast? and where is it?
-
suppose im here because of that specific feature only but I cant really find it anywhere but if its an actual feature heres my question: mainly on how did they able to send data and information in offline mode, im really curious and I hope I can get an explanation on it

HI @Akiiiiiiiiiiiiii, at this moment, we don't have any offline functionality.

As @Ondřej-Šutera said, Windy does not offer the possibility to receive weather forecast when you are offline.
At sea the apps which do it are generally sending the numerical weather data via a narrow band satellite receiver e.g. Iridium Go or similar. This data in light format is GRIB files which need a viewer software to get simplified weather maps. -
Windy, like many weather forecasting websites and applications, likely uses a combination of historical weather data and numerical weather prediction models to generate forecasts for specific locations. Numerical weather prediction models use complex algorithms to simulate the behavior of the atmosphere based on a set of initial conditions, such as temperature, pressure, and wind speed. These models take into account a wide range of physical processes, such as the movement of air masses, the transfer of heat and moisture, and the effects of topography. The forecasts generated by these models are then adjusted using historical weather data and other observations to improve their accuracy. Some weather apps or websites may also use weather radar and satellite images to provide additional information about current weather conditions and to make predictions about future weather patterns.
To make offline weather forecast, the application will have to download the forecast data for the area of interest and store in the device, so that the user can access them even if the device is not connected to the internet.

Two remarks Mate, to your theoretical discourse:
- Windy does NOT use historical data to make weather forecasts. Windy only shows raw forecasts from major weather models and does not adjust them with historical data or with additional observations. If radar or satellite data is involved, it is integrated by the weather model itself and not by Windy.
- The way you describe offline weather forecast does not provide UPDATED data. When the internet connection is off, the only way to get updated weather forecasts is the method explained here above.

Windy is a popular weather forecasting platform that provides a wide range of weather data and forecasts. While Windy primarily operates as an online platform, it is possible to access offline weather forecasts using the mobile app.
When you use Windy's mobile app, the app downloads a small amount of weather data that includes a basic forecast for your location. This forecast data is stored on your device, allowing you to access it even when you are offline.
Windy's offline forecast feature is made possible by its use of global weather models that can be run offline. These models simulate weather patterns and generate forecasts based on historical weather data and real-time observations. The app downloads a small subset of this data to provide you with a basic forecast that can be accessed even when you are not connected to the internet.
It is important to note that Windy's offline forecasts are not as detailed or accurate as its online forecasts, which are constantly updated with the latest weather data. If you need more detailed or up-to-date weather information, you will need to connect to the internet and access Windy's online platform.

Keeping this thread alive for a offline solution. I really like the distance and route calc for boating but going offgrid for 24h+ and making screenshots for the next 24 hours is bit 90s solution ;) Maybe you figure out how to store the planned route data to local app database and display that if no data available.

@Harry-Halman
From July 2023, Windy offers the possibility of testing a new feature. It does not allow you to get weather forecasts in the middle of the ocean. But when leaving the land for a 4 or 5 day passage, you can keep the weather forecast available on your screen even being offline:

Of course, the older the forecast, the worse its accuracy.
This feature works with the Route planner too.Offline mode is only available in the web browser version on laptop or on tablet, not in the mobile app.

Windy makes offline weather forecasts by pre-downloading weather data when you're connected to the internet, which can then be accessed later without a connection. This feature works through the app on mobile devices, allowing users to view forecasts even in offline mode, and it's available globally wherever the Windy app is used.
