Different precipitation predictions from same model
-
Hi, thanks to everyone involved for an excellent resource. I have an issue though:
The same weather model appears to return two different answers to the question 'how much will it rain in the next 12 hrs'.
If I go to 'Rain accumulation', set it to 'Next 12 hours' and tap on my location, it shows rain accumulation of about ~4mm (ECMWF model). However, if I then press the button to see the full forecast from the same location, the data from the four upcoming three-hour periods returns a total of about ~20mm. Not a small difference.
Does anyone know why would that happen and which one is supposed to be more accurate? -

Hi, this is probably because Rain accumulation is computed by the model from 00:00 UTC, which is not equivalent to 12 hours from the current time on the local forecast panel.

@idefix37 Huge thanks. Will ignore the rain accumulation view then for short periods and follow the full forecast view instead. Not sure if you're part of the development team but if you can get a suggestion through to them, I think it needs a big fat warning somewhere that these are not next X hours/days, but rather hours/days starting at X time.

No, I’m not part of the dev team. And I agree that it should be clearly indicated somewhere that Rain accumulation is from 00h UTC.
