@evolab And the worst thing is that they are only recognize money as a support.
-
@evolab You who got me wrong! I am talking about various ways of support rather than praising and myself and many others have involved in, but, at the backstage.
-
@evolab
In my experience, the ability to investigate the multiple different guidance models that Windy has included so far plus get current conditions on one page has never been a free service. Also, I don't think you understand just how much I personally hate ads ahahaha
-
@andydraz Hi, we don't offer corporate subscription at the moment.
-
@Korina
I want to clarify my post here above.
10-day forecasts are now only available for Premium users. Those who complain about it, say that these forecasts are free in other apps. This is true for GFS but not for the high resolution ECMWF model as provided by Windy.
You know that the fees for accessing ECMWF Hi Res model data are terribly high.
Most of weather apps displaying the ECMWF model use in fact the downgraded resolution version which is actually free but with a resolution of 0.4° or about 40 km. It is called WMO essentials because it offers a limited number of parameters as listed by WMO:
https://www.ecmwf.int/en/forecasts/datasets/wmo-essential
So it is important to specify that Windy uses the ECMWF Hi Res model (which by the way is really called IFS, ECMWF being the name of the Center) -
@evolab The consolidation of many different guidance models and the ability to analyze and compare them has never been a free service. This is where the value is. I'm guessing you've never spent money for this ability in order to professionally develop weather forecasts - I have, so I see the value in what they've built.
Anyone with internet service gets to analyze both publicly funded and paid for model data.....efficiently, for free, for the most accurate timeframes of all models. -
@idefix37 Absolutely, and thank you for pointing that out. We do use the high-resolution ECMWF model, which is by no means free. Yes, ECMWF has a free, publicly accessible model with low resolution, but that's not the one we use.
-
@idefix37 Why are you so sure? Are you working with IBM ( the owner of Weather Underground )? You haven't provided a clear evidence that they use the low resolution ECMWF.
Weather Underground has a special forecasting system includes various inputs ( weather models and personal expertise ) named: BestforecastTM and they did not explain which ECMWF they use. -

Absolutely disgusting. Unfortunately Windy has gone from being reliable to being completely unreliable. I have moved on and are using other services.
-
@jissefish Hello, could you please explain how we became unreliable with this change? We haven't replaced our data provider to affect the quality of the forecast.
-
I am normally not one to get annoyed easily, let alone vent it on a public forum. But when I realized the 10 day forecast is now behind a subscription, I had to look it up, and find out what other people think about this change.
Ah well, it's been a decent ride, thank you for providing us with wind forecasts for our multi day sailing trips. It's time to move on to GRIB files. They are still provided by organisations that are a bit less cash hungry.
Farewell and blue skies to you !
-
No one rely on 10 days forecasts at sea, 5 days is a reliable max range.
Using GRIB files, you’ll see those from ECMWF model are never free at 9km resolution. -
The US Gov models are free to everyone. You should not be charging us to use any of the US gov models within ur app as u get the information for free I already paid for it with my taxes. But the 10 day forecast is not the only thing u added to premium. U added so much of ur site to premium that it is pretty much useless to any one in aviation or maritime environment. But people don't need to worry, u can still use the govt aviation and maritime weather sites for free and they also don't have ads. Also Windy is not the first to do this and wont be the last... Someone new will come out just like Windy did and we can switch to them... Windy is actual the 4th app I have transitioned to when the others also changed free stuff to a pay to play app. So now I go back to the govt sites and wait for the next free weather App... lol :)
-
Yes I have premium version but can only get 10 days on tablet, wont work on browser (yes I am signed in).
-
Hi @yellone, do you see this button in your Windy in the browser?
-
@bacardi1492 Hello, the data are still available for free for the next 6 days. Yes, the models are free, but our work to implement them and visualize them is not.
-
@Korina The main merit of the app is visualizing weather data, according to what you 've said, I can conclude that there is a big chance to make the app fully paid. If you think that this work ( visualizing data ) is very tiring to you and you want to get rewarded for it, then, you should view the free data in a way that is nearly free ( I mean gettting the detailed 10 day forecast back without visualization ). By the way, what do you mean by implementing?
-
@Ahmed-A-AS Hi, nobody is pushing you to the Premium version of Windy, and you can use the free version, or you can use a completely different app or website, it is up to you.
However, Windy provides a full package of features and some of them can be free to get for us, and others cost a lot. We work on the implementation of all that data into one single app that you can access in seconds on almost all your devices. All of this is without a single ad in our interface.
And our new subscription plan is a way how we can keep working on new features and data for all users, not only paying ones.
