Watch complication not updating unless I open the app
-
I’m trying to use the Windy Today complication on my Watch, and it’s not working as expected. The temperature/weather shown is usually outdated, capturing some random past weather, and won’t update unless I tap it and open the app to load the current data.
I’ve double checked and the iPhone part of the app does have access to location and to data. Both the iPhone and Watch have a data plan, so that’s not an issue.
I assume that part of the problem is that the Windy app doesn’t have an option to access the location all the time (only never; ask; and when in use).
Is it possible at all to have the complication show the current status without having to open the app?

@Jana-Sobotková Hello Jana, what version of Watch and Windy do you have, please?
-
@Korina hi, it’s Watch 7 (cellular), currently with Watch OS 9.3, but it was the same with several previous OS updates too. Version of Windy shows as 38.00004. Thanks!

@Jana-Sobotková Hi, I recommend reinstalling the Watch App, since we are not able to identify the issue. Let us know if it helps.
-
@Korina I’m afraid it doesn’t help. The Watch complication simply stops updating at some point - because it’s not allowed to access the location data always.
As mentioned in the initial report, the location data usage options for the Windy app only include “when in use”, “ask” and “never”. The option “always” (which is available e.g. for the native Weather app) is missing. So unless you actually open the Windy app manually, the data will stop refreshing, and the complication will keep displaying the last known temperature / weather conditions. Which kinda defeats the purpose of a complication - I don’t want to open an app to see the information, it is supposed to be showing on the Watch face on the complication.
So the fix would be to have the Windy app include the Always option for the location data usage.

@Jana-Sobotková Hello, we made some improvements. Do you still have this issue?
-
I’m unfortunately having this same issue. The temperature shown at noon is the same as earlier in the day. I’ve tried reinstalling the watch app with no success fixing the issue.
9.5.2 (watch)
16.5.1 iOS
39.1.4 Windy -
@mcmjr02 How long the time period between these two checks was? Because if you are not a Premium member, you have 3hour steps in the forecast, so it could be completely same value in 3 hours.
-
@Ondřej-Šutera thanks for the reply (and apologies for my slow response). It’s often 6+ hrs of no updating. At lunchtime, the temp will be the same as when I woke up in the morning (and I’m in a climate where the degree difference btw the two is substantial.)
-
@mcmjr02 And do we talk about complication on your watch face or in app forecast?
-
@Ondřej-Šutera The complication. I've attached two screen shots taken seconds apart at 3:59pm. One is showing the temperature/conditions early in the morning. The second shows the current conditions that populate after I manually open the watch app. In other words, the complication is not updating from earlier conditions unless i manually open the app. (and yes, it's miserably hot here.)

@mcmjr02 Can you please monitor these updates without visiting app for a longer time. Basically, these updates are handled by the system of the device and they can be affected by battery, connection, etc. However, if update is not made at all, that would be an issue then on our end.
-
@Ondřej-Šutera Hi Ondřej, I have the same issue, at least twice per day the watch are showing older temperature in the complication but when I open the app and going back to complication it is immedialy refreshed to a current one.
-
@Brancis These updates depend on the setup of the whole system of the device, it can depend on battery restrictions or status.
-
@Ondřej-Šutera Hi Ondřej, it is weird as other complications which I have on the same watch face are correctly updated. As more users are reporting same issue maybe it makes sense to check it on your side. Thank you.
-
Hello @Brancis ,
In the last update, I modified the logic regarding 1H settings, the app should no longer switch back to 3H forecast.
If this is still happening, please let me know in what situation it occurs and I will look at it again.
At the moment it changes the 1H forecast to 3H in the following situations:- The user has logged out of Windy
- User has run out of premium
I have prevented a situation where the validation token has expired, which could just be causing the behavior described ( settings will remain unchanged, but the forecast will be non-premium ). This situation should occur minimally ( when the apple watch or iPhone app hasn't been running for more than 3 days ) and the user has no complication on the watchface and the system won't allow a background update. As soon as it is restarted premium will be restored.

@SimonUrbanek Hi Simon, this thread is about the not updating of complication. Can you please also check this issue? I replied to you in the second thread regarding to the 1h vs 3h issue. Thanks a lot.
-
@Ondřej-Šutera @SimonUrbanek hi guys, is there a plan to check this issue? It is still occurring unfortunately :/ thanks a lot
-
@Brancis Do you mean the issue with auto-updates of complications? Did you already update the Apple Watch OS to v.10?
-
@Ondřej-Šutera Ahoj Ondrej, I meant the issue which I mentioned previously above: "at least twice per day the watch are showing older temperature in the complication but when I open the app and going back to complication it is immediately refreshed to a current one."
I have updated the Apple Watch OS to v.10 and have also the latest Windy app. Thank you.
