The UKV model, now freely available on Windy.com to all of our users, has an impressive resolution of 2km, the highest resolution weather forecast possible for the UK, and provides our users with enhanced detail and improved accuracy. This is crucial in areas with geographical features such as hills, mountains, and coastlines, where understanding the terrain can greatly affect the forecast quality.

The model is available for 20 different weather layers, including temperature, wind speed, and precipitation, allowing users to get a complete picture of the weather conditions in the United Kingdom and extended surroundings.

Update times are as follows:

Every 6 hours for Premium users

Every 12 hours for free users

“As the UK’s meteorological service it’s crucial that we work proactively with partners to provide expert Met Office data and information wherever people get their weather forecast. Met Office model output on Windy.com provides users with enhanced detail at an improved resolution, helping make sure everyone has access to the forecast information they need to make better decisions to stay safe and thrive.” Ian Cameron, Met Office Markets Director

Better UK Weather Radar

In addition to the new UKV forecast model, the Met Office has provided us with the maximum quality of weather radar data for the UK and Ireland, allowing us to show the most accurate information about precipitation possible!

The new radar has an update interval of 5 minutes with 500 meters resolution. Features like this contribute to better weather pattern detection and tracking.

How to navigate

The UKV model is selectable from the models' menu if the map is positioned over the British Isles on the desktop and in the App.

I don’t mind it automatically switching to the global model because it’s handy to see that view. However as expected, this then becomes the overlay that “Use last overlay” saves when I close the app.
I do realise that if I return to the app after a short time (because the app hasn’t fully closed in the background), I’m still on the global model which is again ok. What I’d like to request please is that when I open the app several hours later after iOS has closed the app in the background (or a manual force close), the model defaults to UKV (or whichever model is specified in a new setting option).
Hope that helps.

Unfortunately the method described to use the last overlay doesn’t permanently make UKV the default model when launching the app.

If for example I use temperature overlay along with UKV model and set “Start-up layer and location” as “Use last overlay”, force closing and launching the app does default back to UKV. However this default can easily be overwritten by simply zooming out on the map view which causes the model to automatically change to ECMWF on the map and within “Use last overlay”.

Is this inability to set a permanent default model linked to the difficulties you described in your previous reply to me? I can understand it would be difficult to do as a widget but what about within the app please?

I find the UKV model much more accurate than ECMWF and it’s frustrating always having to manually swap back to UKV within settings each time I look at a wider map view. As a new subscriber based in the UK this feature is quite important to me so 🤞🏻 you are able to find a fix for this.

Thanks in advance.
