Windy keeps switching to ECMWF
-
I am trying to use a different forecast model (MBLUE), as ECMWF has been pretty poor lately at predicting precipitation. But I can't find a way to convince Windy to remember my choice. It always keeps switching to ECMWF after restart.
I did try the (found in forums) "Settings | Start-up layer and location | Use last overlay" thing and it did not help. I still always get ECMWF.
How do I switch the default model?

@jrychter
Probably because you leave the app with an other model,
or you open Windy with the widget. -
Hi @jrychter MBLUE is available only in the forecast detail, which cannot be adjusted anyhow. There is always the same model, which is used in the map if it is available or default ECMWF.
"Use last overlay" only helps you to set the model in the map, not forecast detail.

@idefix37 I'm opening the app as an app, not as a widget.
@Ondřej-Šutera I'm not sure what you mean by "forecast detail". I'd like to use MBLUE as The Model, period. So, for the main forecast displayed after I hit the home icon (not sure why I need to tap the home icon, but anyway), and for the forecast that appears after I tap the main forecast. Also for all widgets.
I just want to switch the default model — surely this must be possible?

@jrychter if you mean this by the main forecast, default model cannot be adjusted, unfortunately.

Ok, if I may make a humble suggestion, then. The reason why I pay for Windy is to quickly check the weather (I know this sounds obvious, but apparently it isn't?). When I launch Windy I get this:
This doesn't give me the weather. It shows a picture of Europe, but what I want to know is whether it will rain later today. So, I have to tap the "Home" icon to get to this:
This is somewhat better, but it still doesn't tell me if I'll get water on my head later today when biking. So, I click the forecast to get this:
We are now past three taps in the app and I have a forecast! Yay! The problem is, this forecast shows no rain today, while it's raining outside my window. MBLUE did predict the rain, ECMWF did not. In other words, what I have on my screen isn't useful. I have to tap twice more to switch to MBLUE.
So, after finding and launching the app we are now up to four (precise) taps just to see the weather. In a weather app.
I would respectfully submit that this is a problem worth solving and a possible area for improvement :-)

Hi @jrychter you are right that the model in the forecast detail (main forecast) could be adjustable and thank you for this suggestion. However, I would recommend using GPS for your Startup location, so you avoid clicking on the home button and your user journey to MBLUE model can be a bit shorter.
Also, you can use our widgets, which can provide basic or advanced info from ECMWF, ICON or GFS and you can click on them to get straight into the main forecast, which is again a bit shorter way how to get to MBLUE model.

@Ondřej-Šutera Using the GPS for my start-up location is a great suggestion! Have you tried it? I'm happy to provide a screenshot of how the app starts up 🙂:
I will draw your attention to the fact that while the app does indeed start in the correct GPS location, it does not show me the forecast. I have to tap the "Home" icon to see anything about the weather forecast, and that only shows me the multi-day forecast.
The widgets suggestion is also interesting. Have you actually tried it? 😎 The widget does not show the MBLUE model.

@jrychter I missed that, sorry, you probably don't have turned 4 days forecast on at startup. You don't have to click on the Home button then. Please check this option:
As I mentioned in my previous message. I am aware that we offer only certain models in our widgets, but you can get straight into the forecast, where you only change the model. That was my point and hint for faster usage of our app.

@Ondřej-Šutera said in Windy keeps switching to ECMWF:

Thank you! That is a helpful suggestion and I can save at least one tap by enabling that.
As for MBLUE being available everywhere (in the widgets) and the ability to set/remember the default model, can I please ask that you add those to the feature queue?
I'm hoping we won't end this discussion and simply forget about this.

@jrychter I will definitely forward this to our product team, at least for consideration, since it is not planned at the moment. However, I hope you understand that we get a lot of tips and suggestions and cannot satisfy all of them.

@Ondřej-Šutera I do understand. I just thought that these are relatively small changes.
I am also slightly worried that I might not be the target user for this app. I've been a subscriber for more than a year now and always wondered why it takes so many taps to get to information that I need. I waited, because I was sure this was so obvious to developers, that things would get fixed/improved soon.
But it seems that it is not obvious to your product team that users want to launch the app and see their preferred forecast without tapping multiple times, which worries me. If I were to design a weather app, that would be my #1 use case scenario.
Thank you, and I hope you will consider my suggestions.
