Spain is currently facing one of its worst droughts in recent history, with the region of Catalonia experiencing an intense heat wave. The ongoing climate crisis is causing severe water scarcity, and experts believe that the situation will worsen as hotter and drier conditions become more frequent due to climate change.

Rivers and reservoirs in Spain have reached alarmingly low levels, with some areas reporting the worst conditions in decades. The water shortage has led to restrictions on water usage and is significantly impacting agricultural production, which is crucial to the country's economy.

Farmers face increasing challenges in maintaining crops and livestock, while cities and towns struggle to provide sufficient water supplies for their inhabitants.

Monitor the true extent of Spain's devastating drought with our advanced drought mapping layers:

      Drought intensity

Drought intensity compares the actual amount of water available to plants with the values recorded for the given area during the same time period of the year between 1961 and 2010. Each drought intensity class represents a particular drought period return probability.

      Soil moisture

Readily available soil water represents the amount of water available to plants as a proportion of the maximum soil water content that can be permanently held within the given soil column.

      Moisture anomaly

Available water deficit is the amount of water in mm/inch per the visualized soil column that is missing (or is in surplus) compared to the common levels (average of 1961 to 2010) of available water at the given site and time of the year.

The region of Catalonia IS NOT experiencing an intense heat wave. The weather is mild. Drier than the past year, but nothing unusual.

@Korina It's called Iberian peninsula and includes Portugal and Spain. I believe you should correct your article, at least.
