Setting default forecast model
-
Hi folks,
The Windy Android app ought to allow setting the default forecast model, or at least remembering what model was recently used.
I'd like the app to open with HRRR, not ECMWF. I already set the start up layer to use last overlay, but this doesn't help.
Thanks!

@a_bee You need to set your last layer and location to the last used ones. But if you mean this forecast, it cannot be changed to certain model.
-
@Ondřej-Šutera yes, this is the point of the report and I've had the same complaint for years now. We shouldn't have to select the best model for our individual areas EVERY TIME WE OPEN THE APP. Don't say it can't be done because you did it already in the past and then it stopped working again eg if you set the widget to the model you want ie HRRR and then open the app from the widget, the model should STAY on HRRR not keep referring to ECMWF.
Come on guys. This shouldn't be that hard especially when you've done it before. You want premium subscribers (like me) but won't fix an obvious and very annoying problem.
PLEASE look at this.

@hulakai
I'm using the Windy Detail Widget on Android, windy app v38.1.5. It's set to HRRR. I click the widget to open the app and it displays with HRRR. I change the widget settings to ECMWF for example, it opens the app in ECMWF.
Works the same with the Windy Days Forecast Widget.Maybe I'm not understanding this issue?
-
@Wheats Every time I open the website, the current model is reset to ECMWF (I guess based on location) despite my preference being set to "last used". I'd expect this to be saved on a cookie and/or within the profile.
I never tried before but I setup a widget on the android app with the model set to ICON-D2. When I open the app through it, the forecast model is still ECMWF.
I alternate between models, so this is not a big issue, but having a model preference would be great.

@wavexx Maybe post here some more info regarding your device and the version of the app and someone can help. Like I said, it's opening with whatever model I have it set to on my android devices.
-
@wavexx Hello, widgets offer the option to set a different model than ECMWF. Please check.
-
@Wheats I also feel the OP's frustration! Whenever I open the app (via app drawer or clicking in widget) the forecast model resets to ECMWF. (I have the detail widget set to Meteoblue model.) If I change the model back to Meteoblue then close and reopen the app and long-press home icon, I see the app has reset the model to ECMWF. Ugh. Happens every time. Why is ECMWF the only default?
[Currently on Android app version 40.0.7; start up layer and location are both set to "Use last"]
-
@Hypoallergenic Meteoblue is only available as a point forecast, meaning there are no layers for it - so maybe that's why?
I wonder, if you set your widget on a different model and opened it, would it open with your selected model? or open with the ECMWF still? -
@Korina @Ondřej-Šutera
Is this normal behaviour? I just realized this and I don't think this is acting properly?
My Device: Samsung S20FE, Android, Windy v40.0.7.Initial Settings:
Windy Detail Widget:- Forecast Model = HRRR
App:
- Start-up layer and location, Start-up layer = Wind
Behaviour:
(widget shows HRRR)
Open app via Widget - windy app opens with HRRR
Open app via app in app drawer - windy app opens default ECMWFNew Settings:
Windy Detail Widget:- Forecast Model = HRRR
App:
- Start-up layer and location, Start-up layer = Use Last Overlay
Behaviour:
(widget shows HRRR)
Open app via Widget - windy app opens with last overlay (not HRRR)
Open app via app in app drawer - windy app opens with last overlayWhen "Use Last Overlay" is selected, it seems to ignore the Widget settings.
I do agree that the user experience would be better if we could just select a default model. -
@Wheats
I’m not using Android devices, but on iOS too, if you open Windy with the widget, the “Use last overlay” setting does not works. -
@Wheats I see same behavior Samsung A13 5g Windy 40.1.0
-
@Wheats @idefix37 @Norman-Vine Please confirm my tests, to be sure, I am talking about the same issue.
If I open the widget with certain location and ICON model, for example. It takes me to the correct location but the detail contains ECMWF data.
-
@Ondřej-Šutera if I open with widget I get right location and model set in widget
If I open with icon I get right location with ECMWF no matter what I have set model to in settings -
@Norman-Vine Okay, I already see the issue, Android doesn't work in the case of ICON model, but the rest is okay.
iOS selects ECMWF as a default always.
-
@Ondřej-Šutera I tested with the ICON and the HRRR models same results both models
-
@Ondřej-Šutera
now I'm getting confused.As long as I don't have "use last overlay" on as the start-up layer, the widget will open with whatever model I have selected (if Meteoblue is my widget, then it opens with ECMWF). If my widget is set to show me ICON detail, it will open with ICON model, HRRR? open with HRRR, NAM? open with NAM etc.
If "use last overlay" is on - the widget will open with the last overlay I used (ignoring what the widget is set to).
My vote is to let us users select the default model WE want to see every single time the app opens.....customizing OUR experience. This solution exists - but only when "use last overlay" is not used, and we open the app using the widget specifically.
In summary, my vote:
- add "start-up model" in the start-up settings
- widget settings always ignore the cloud-saved start-up settings - and always use the widget's settings
If these things are possible, they would be fantastic additions in my opinion.
-
@Wheats I know that possibility to set the favorite model in the detail is really wanted and I will propose this to colleagues if it is possible in next planned releases.
-
Hi, you may set a different model than ECMWF using widgets. Kindly make sure.
