Understanding the Compare Forecast Feature in Windy.com

For short range the HRRR in the USA.
-
@Korina Regarding the competition, can you explain further how the 3 users are being selected?
-
I find ECMWF the best for my location but when forecasters are throwing their hands up in the air unsure I just love seeing what HRRR and GFS have to say. Have not tried out Compare feature yet but it sure is time to here in New England US.

With the recent update, we have incorporated a 1-hour forecast option into the Compare Forecast feature. In light of this enhancement, it's the perfect time to offer a more detailed insight into the functionality of this powerful tool!
Let's start with the basics
The Compare Forecast feature allows us to compare forecasts from different models, thus providing a holistic and more nuanced understanding of the weather patterns for a specific location. This is especially useful for professionals who need more comprehensive data or for users who wish to understand the variability between models.
Multiple Model Comparison
The primary appeal of the Compare forecast feature is the ability to view multiple weather models side by side. Among the available models are ECMWF, GFS, Meteoblue, and ICON models. Having multiple models to compare allows for analyzing the level of agreement or disagreement between them, providing a sense of the range of possible outcomes. By comparing forecasts from multiple models, you can gain more confidence in predictions where the models agree and be more cautious where they don't.
Comprehensive Weather Information
The Compare Forecast feature covers various weather elements, including temperature, wind speed, and precipitation. The data format is identical to the Basic view in the detailed forecast, meaning these data points are presented visually and numerically, so you can understand the forecast intuitively.
Giveaway
We are also launching a seasonal giveaway. The theme of this competition is WEATHER MODELS! We want to know what is your most used weather model. Comment your answer below this article until 30.6. and we will select 3 users who will win our significant Windy snapback.
Hi,
I'm from Brazil and I use most frequently the ECMWF model, due to its smaller area range (most accurate).
I frequently make a double check on the forecast (for same area and same period) using the GFS model -
I usually use the ECMWF 9km model to determine general trends here in Taiwan. I always check the compare feature when I want to be more confident.

经常使用海浪页面查看风速,风向,浪高、暗涌
-
@Korina Being an Aussie the Access model is the fav for me!
-
Morning All, I use the ECMRF pretty much all the time as I find its the best for upper air forcasting where I operate. I'm a balloon pilot so I focus on 2000 - 5000 ft ASL.
Cheers -
I live in Australia at altitude so the ECMWF and ACCESS are generally the 2 I lean towards. Thanks for a wonderful product and resourcing tool.
-
I generally prefer ECMWF for checking weather forecast. I also use GFS sometimes. For some local weather forecast in India I use NCUM by NCMRWF.
-
I use the ECMWF model for clouds to determine what nights would be good for astronomy. However the ACCESS model by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology was slightly better at predicting how much rain actually fell over Adelaide during a day of heavy rainfall (48 mm) - June 22nd 2023. Was interesting to see the different rainfall predictions for each model and how they faired over the course of that day.
-
I live in Reno, Nevada and HRRR is the best one for me. NAM is a close second.
-
Nice post/remark of you: I use 90% ECMWF (european) and 10% GFS (american) in order to spot where they agree and where they diverge for the reasons you explained :-)
-
ACCESS - seems to give the most realistic forecast for Australia
-
I use Windy Premium whilst in Mauritius and find it really helpful.
-
I use the ECMWF model for its smaller resolution. :) But its good to keep the larger ones in mind. ;)

ECMWF
-
@Korina I mostly use the ICON-D2.
-
I usually prefer ICON-D2. If I don't like its prediction, I also look at ECMWF :-)
Btw, is there any chance that Windy would also display the Aladin model?
-
@Korina Depending on the region, but mostly ECMWF is the winner :-)
