Help us to test Windy.com in offline mode
-
I'm running Chrome Version 119.0.6045.214 (Official Build) (64-bit) on a very underpowered Chromebook (n3060, 4MB, 32GB).
All of my downloads failed (even gradually reducing number of days) until I went to chrome://serviceworker-internals/ and manually started the Windy service worker. After that all of them worked.
There's a message in the service worker logs but I'm not sure it's related:
Console: {"lineNumber":0,"message":"Access to fetch at 'https://ims-s.windy.com/account/images/1599902-profileavatar.png?1688824588440' from origin 'https://www.windy.com' has been blocked by CORS policy: No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource. If an opaque response serves your needs, set the request's mode to 'no-cors' to fetch the resource with CORS disabled.","message_level":3,"sourceIdentifier":1,"sourceURL":""}

Offline Mode :)) https://i.windy.com/a/548xr/5n2av0.mp4

I had not tested Offline mode until the website was available on iPad, in addition to the app. When sailing I only use this device or my mobile phone.
The Offline mode works really well for me for a first test, and it is very easy to use.
There is only one point that questions me: what is the use of the square on the map? It might suggest that this is the area in which the weather map will appear after loading, as other apps work in offline mode. In @ivo pictures it is said as âdownloaded areaâ.
But itâs not the case for me, nor in other users screenshots. We get the data full screen. -
EDIT
I see that the square allows me to roughly locate the downloaded area.
-
Just an inconsistent display.
I downloaded Wind and Waves for 2 days.The timeline for Waves is OK
The timeline for Wind seems showing 10 days available, which is not the case of course.

I discovered this feature today, and I'm very happy; this, along with weather routing, will make Windy the perfect weather app, making expensive sailing-focused apps obsolete.
Some comments, comparing with the experience using GRIB files:
-
looks like a bigger area than the red square is downloaded? it would be useful to be able to limit the area to reduce data size.
-
it would be good to know in advance the amount of data that will be downloaded (important for remote, satellite communications)
-
download progress bar could include amount downloaded, speed, ETA
Thank you for implementing this!!

@ivo
Further to previous tests, it seems that Route planner is now working with the offline mode on iPad. Iâll test it in future sailing week ends. -
@ivo
As said in a previous post, the time line for wind should be shorten as I set the offline mode to be loaded for only 2 days. The timeline for waves is correct, not that of the wind.Wind:
Waves:
I admit it is a small detail.

Work on a weather routing algorithm for sailing and let it use the ACCESS model and you'll blow PredictWind out of the water...

@ivo FF seems fine now. Why has WCT 'Ready for' 8h 48m (9h), here it´s max 6h.?

Today my internet is horrible, I mean best to test offline mode.
Is the altitude slider expected to be working now?
Only surface data seems to be available, like weeks ago when You offered it for testing.
(Here no altitude expected :)Edit: I can´t switch to Icon or Icon-D2 when the connection is broken, it works immediately, when net comes back.
It seems, that the "service worker đˇââ ", a browser tool only available ONLINE is needed to switch the models. It can also get lost when switching online/offline mode.
Now I have the SW-icon, but nevertheless can´t swich to offline.
After all that exercices it also can happen, that I can´t open the menu nor switch models, with or without SWđˇââ, on or offmode .

Any Chance to add clear air turbulence to the downloadable layers for pilots?

it would be really useful for a sailor if no signal far away from coast

80% only

@Blanchot
80% of what ? -

Hello, it would be super useful to do an offline mode on mobile in some format. I'm frequently in remote areas with no service and have to resort to screenshotting the app on my phone in multiple locations to keep a 5-7 day forecast for a long mission - would be awesome to be able to offline this with more detail.
-
@xander-wij Unfortunately, the offline mode was stopped as a project.

so then why we need to pay you a premium subscription if we cannot use it while offshore?
its more smart to pay subscription who supports this
im right?
