Help us to test Windy.com in offline mode
-
Hi Guys
Since modern Internet browsers introduced new technology "Service Worker", we have developed offline mode of Windy, thanks to it.
Offline mode was just released, and it is in testing mode.
It is available only for desktop browsers so far and can be reach just on this link: https://www.windy.com/offline
You are welcome to give it a decent try and let us know your feedback.
Known bug: stuck download
There is one BUG in offline mode, we are aware of. Downloading of offline data, gets sometimes stuck. Reloading the page, and opening https://www.windy.com/offline helps, but this can not be permanent solution. If you are a techie, maybe you will be able to help us, find this nasty BUG.
Problems accessing Windy.com
Service Worker acts as a proxy server in between your browser and Internet, so if you will have a feeling, that there is something wrong with access to Windy.com, just delete Service Worker, and you are fine.
How to delete Service Worker
In you browser, go to View -> Developer -> Developer Tools
In Developer Tools go to folder Application, then select Service Workers, and here Unregister
Of course all this you must do on www.windy.com address

I can't tell any difference. Radar still worked.

🔴👈 Where is that button? {WinX & Firefox rebooted}
? (How much data is transferred?) -
@Caefix Hi, can you please test it in a different browser? I will report this issue in Firefox to colleagues, thank you for reporting.

@Ondřej-Šutera Here are screenshots for MS-Edge & AVG
📝📐The window seems too small... Maybe it´s solved with slider ----0--------- & "5 days" in a singe line?
(Btw. 1st try with Edge cancelled ~34%)
Better with particle animation off (~70%)
After several tries download succeeded. With the trail map in the background, Windy seems "idle".
The more data, the higher the risk. 10 days, 2 models, 5 layers only succeeded once.

Yesterday´s download is gone. I hoped, the new mode could bridge some days of offline conditions 🌊⛵🦈 or 🏔< with the saved data.
ECMWF is always part of the package, full range 10 days & global.
🌰🐿🍃 All data is available for surface level only, at least one upper level was quite useful.Another observation: Offline the slider isn´t limited to the range of the model.
-
2 days, 1 layer and 1 model only worked, gonna try again with 10 days, 5 layers and 2 models.

We have fixed some issues and next week (around 11.1.2024) should be deployed.
Seems like, we are able to prevent stuck downloads in Chrome & Safari, but FF is unable to finish download.
-
@ivo And what about Opera? I had to reload the page to complete download several times...

Hello Windy Team,
I am using Chrome version 109.0.5414.168 (Official Build) (64-bit)....I know this one is old but in this, the Download stuck at 54.8%. I tried downloading : Wind + Rain-Thunder + ECMF data for 3 Days for Sailors for the shown region in the screenshots attached. Umm....the 2 screenshots are attached.
This was my quick look and a quick feedback for the known bug :)
As and when I find something, I will post :)Thank you.

@K-Weather hi guys, same here! Version 120.0.6099.217 (Offizieller Build) (64-Bit)
thx. greets -
I'm running Chrome Version 119.0.6045.214 (Official Build) (64-bit) on a very underpowered Chromebook (n3060, 4MB, 32GB).
All of my downloads failed (even gradually reducing number of days) until I went to chrome://serviceworker-internals/ and manually started the Windy service worker. After that all of them worked.
There's a message in the service worker logs but I'm not sure it's related:
Console: {"lineNumber":0,"message":"Access to fetch at 'https://ims-s.windy.com/account/images/1599902-profileavatar.png?1688824588440' from origin 'https://www.windy.com' has been blocked by CORS policy: No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource. If an opaque response serves your needs, set the request's mode to 'no-cors' to fetch the resource with CORS disabled.","message_level":3,"sourceIdentifier":1,"sourceURL":""}

I had not tested Offline mode until the website was available on iPad, in addition to the app. When sailing I only use this device or my mobile phone.
The Offline mode works really well for me for a first test, and it is very easy to use.
There is only one point that questions me: what is the use of the square on the map? It might suggest that this is the area in which the weather map will appear after loading, as other apps work in offline mode. In @ivo pictures it is said as “downloaded area”.
But it’s not the case for me, nor in other users screenshots. We get the data full screen. -
EDIT
I see that the square allows me to roughly locate the downloaded area.
-
Just an inconsistent display.
I downloaded Wind and Waves for 2 days. The timeline for Waves is OK
The timeline for Wind seems showing 10 days available, which is not the case of course.

I discovered this feature today, and I'm very happy; this, along with weather routing, will make Windy the perfect weather app, making expensive sailing-focused apps obsolete.
Some comments, comparing with the experience using GRIB files:
-
looks like a bigger area than the red square is downloaded? it would be useful to be able to limit the area to reduce data size.
-
it would be good to know in advance the amount of data that will be downloaded (important for remote, satellite communications)
-
download progress bar could include amount downloaded, speed, ETA
Thank you for implementing this!!

@ivo
Further to previous tests, it seems that Route planner is now working with the offline mode on iPad. I’ll test it in future sailing week ends.
