Temp & Wind markers not in-sync w/ weather radar & satellite images
-
On the weather radar image layer, as well as the satellite image layer & winds layer, etc., when reported temperature or winds are displayed, they fail to synchronize with the time of the underlying layer. See below images, one taken at 10PM, the other 8hrs earlier at 2PM, but the temperatures shown are identical. This is highly misleading. Hope Windy corrects this soon. I have reported this bug earlier this year but no improvement has happened.

@hangInThere This seems like something that would require archiving data in order to display it in sync with past radar/satellite images. Not sure if they are into the archiving game as of yet - maybe in the future?!
-
@Ondřej-Šutera, can you look into this issue?
@Wheats The temperature and wind velocity data for the past 7 days are readily available anytime b/c when any one of the temperature/wind marker is clicked on the chart that pops up goes back 7 days. And if you slide the vertical hairline on the chart to any day & any hour the temperature and wind velocity under the vertical hairline are reported in a pop-up box just above the chart. So all the meat and hooks are there. I am only surprised why Windy doesn't reflect the corresponding values on the markers when the slider on the horizontal time slider rail slides to a different time. Seems overlooked. -
@hangInThere Majority of layers have the timeline with future view only and data from stations are available historically. Only radar and satellite have this option so this static view of temperatures and windy from stations is intentional.
-
@Ondřej-Šutera I suggest your team review this intentional decision of static display of reported temperatures and wind velocities. The user experience is very bad and misleading, as I wrote at the beginning of this thread, when the reported weather data is static while the weather radar image and satellite image keeps updating. @Filip_K

@hangInThere We discussed this and you are right that this would be a nice feature in radar and satellite layers. I will forward this to colleagues, however, I need to ask you for a patience with this, since the change is a bit more complicated for implementation.
-
@Ondřej-Šutera I am relieved you will ask your team to consider rectifying this shortcoming in an otherwise highly satisfactory product.
It is highly, highly unusual to intentionally display info on maps that contradict the facts, as here, where the weather radar/satellite image shows current info and the temperature/wind markers show completely outdated info, to say the least.
Frankly, I have never seen a weather map like that except on Windy, and I find it highly incomprehensible that your product team could knowingly accept this and not fix it urgently. Like I wrote in the first message in this thread, I flagged this problem on Windy forum earlier this year, so this isn't something new. I can understand your development team manpower was mostly tied up in the new UI work for version 39, but now that the new version is up and running you should have someone to look around at what haven't been working too well and fix them. I have a number of Windy issues that I raised that haven't been addressed, but this should be the FIRST to get fixed.
So far, I have had to intentionally turn off the temperature and winds markers. But occasionally when I turn them on to have a look and forget to turn them off then subsequently many images that I capture manually or automatically every 10 minutes overnight off Windy all become trash unless I slap on a text to disclaim the wind/temperature markers which I haven't gotten around to do. I now have lots of images like this that need to be labelled with said false wind/temperature warning, and I don't know which one to trust, so I can only assume none of them is safe.
Frankly, I don't think the coding part is complicated at all. Windy must have an internal event generator when displaying radar/satellite image that every 10 minutes or so downloads new image data from the server. All needs to be added is to call a new function upon the event to collect a short list of the markers currently being shown within the window, check the last update time of each one and their respective update intervals to know which markers are up for update, and request update data for the specific markers from the server. The amount of data to download is tiny compared with the new radar/satellite image to download next. @Filip_K

Shouldn't Windy simply turn off automatically weather stations display when Radar or Satellite layers are shown to avoid that you forget to do it ?
This is done with isobars. They disappear when you switch to Radar or Satellite, but the user can turn them on again. Are they synchronised with these layers ? Of course not as they change by 1h-steps.
Can the wind speed and temperature reports be synchronised with Radar and Satellite? This seems tricky as these reports are outdated with 30 minutes and some with more than an hour.
And worse, should Windy display together weather stations observations and weather models forecast ? Are they synchronised? No.
Most of the additional map items which can be selected as overlay are not synchronised with the models forecasts or with Radar and Satellite layers.
So the best solution to fulfill your requirements would be to show them only with the Outdoor map. -
@idefix37 That's overly complicated. I am not looking for the most general recipe but just to update the wind/temperature markers for radar/satellite layers if the time slider is dragged to the far-right (i.e. to display the latest available image) at whatever intervals that updates are available from the reporting stations. As I said in an earlier post the other day, the data is available and as I delineated today the coding work is quite straightforward. There is no practical reason not do get it done.
And there is practical reason to want to display current temperatures/winds on a radar/satellite image. The land temperatures/winds can be very useful to predict the course of a squall coming in from the sea at night. -
@hangInThere
As shown in the mobile app, the reported temperature or reported wind speed displayed on the map is the latest values uploaded by Windy usually with a delay of 20 minutes when the Radar or Satellite loop is near present time i.e. with the time slider to the right. -
@idefix37 For sure Windy mobile app loads up the latest reported values whenever brought to front from the phone window's background each time. In common usage no app is left occupying the foreground of the phone for long to notice Windy doesn't update the wind/temp labels by itself.
It's a different matter for desktop use altogether. Here, multiple windows are open and active simultaneously. Even some windows may be fully/partially occluded but activities still continue. I have weather radar + satellite images displayed and continually updated all night and they get automatically screenshot to save into files for analysis later in the day.
