      I have recently noticed cross sections for site specific location using GFS now indicates thunderstorms(under weather type) however this is not indicated under rain /thunder parameter for areal forecast(as. with ECMWF). Is it possible to add consistency?

                    The site specific forecast has ⛈️ symbol at 1600 pm whereas the areal forecast has no ⚡ symbols.Hope this makes sense ?

                    Incidentally have not seen thunderstorms symbols in GFS before , ECMWF fields have shown them all along)

                    Regards.

                      @matt590

                      From long time, there is only the Rain, thunder layer from ECMWF showing lighting symbols. All the other models don’t show these marks. Same with the Thunderstorm layer only available with ECMWF.

                        @idefix37 Hi,

                        I get what your saying, your comment ref:ECMWF restates my observation that thunderstorm layer has been available in ECMWF, but what is NEW (last few days)is that under "forecast for this location, "⚡🌩️ now sometimes appears within GFS (example shown at 1600 for Paris) ...if this is the case my query was could this(⚡ )be added to the areal GFS "rain/ thunder" fields ? Maybe not.

                        Regards.

                          Frankly I don’t know, if the GFS data giving these lightning symbols in the point forecast table could be added to the Rain, thunder layer of this model ?

                            @idefix37 Fair comment, thanks anyway, just intrigued by appearance of ⚡ symbols within GFS, presumably based on CAPE or cloud top temperature?
