Horrible Update
-
I’m sorry, I just don’t get the distance and planning on the new version. Let me tell you what I do and then maybe you can give me some advice of what I need to do on the new version.
I use an iPad.
I have a friend leaving Bermuda tomorrow heading for the Chesapeake Bay. I am helping him plan a route for his sailboat. Waypoint #1 will be just off Bermuda. There will be light wind so he will motor at 6 knots and because there is south west wind forecasted for later in the week, he will head due west. Waypoint #2 will be 144 miles at 270 degrees from #1.
Light wind on day two, but maybe enough to sail a bit. Distance covered day 2 about 120 miles at 270 degrees for waypoint #3. Then the next day a ssw wind so he will head up a bit to around 290 degrees for maybe 130 miles, for waypoint #4, based on the predicted wind speed. And so on…..
I do that for the whole forecast period and give him a course to steer……
Now, if I want to grab a waypoint along the track somewhere and fine tune it and drag it to a different position, I can’t. When placing a waypoint I can’t see the coordinates until after I place the waypoint and I can’t see the course from the last waypoint.
If I choose “boat” for the planner, yes I can drag waypoints around and delete waypoints, but I can’t add a waypoint . If I scroll the days forward with the route planner on, the weather map doesn’t change, and that’s useless for what I do.
It has just become way too cumbersome. I agree with other users that the graphics on the menu bar on the right are not good and the menu bar itself is too big.Overall I have loved Windy, and wind models are extremely accurate, especially the gfs for offshore, anywhere around the world. And an incredible amount of useful information available with all the layers. Thank you for providing a great website. If you could just revert the Distance and Planning to the previous version, or tell me what I am missing, or doing wrong, I would be grateful.
Thank you. -

At the moment I would not recommend using Route planner on iPad because it is showing by a bug. The wind direction is not set to North up in the diagram :

You say your friend is leaving tomorrow. Do you have the possibility to use the route planner on a website, PC or Mac? -
I never have used the planner because it doesn’t work for what I do. I can make the latest update work on my iPad, but it takes 3 to 4 times longer and it is just dreadful to use. Hopefully they can fix this. Thanks for the feedback.

This is a screenshot I’m referring. If I am not wrong Wind direction in table and in the figure are 180° difference. What is the right one? Thank you for the other answers. Vincenzo Napoli -
@Ondřej-Šutera I also very dissapointed about the new user interface, can't find anything, and if I find it it'isnt works as before. This is a horrible update for me, I also don't want to re-learn everything. Please just simply revert, or I'll cancel my subscription.

@vincenzo
The right wind direction is that of the wind map, not in the table. There is a bug in the Route planner in the mobile app, not on the website, which needs to be fixed shortly. -
@idefix37
Thank you for your clarification and I hope the bug will be fixed soon because this functions sounds very useful.
Another question always regarding the same.
Is the table dinamic I mean, the Météo values refers to the time and the position on the route ?
Tls again. VN -

Yes, it is the main advantage of Route planner. It give the weather forecast along the route according to the time and to the position of the mobile on that route.
But the route planner in the app is different from the one on the website. In the mobile app it is a simplified feature.

@idefix37 Question for you. I want to drop waypoint #1 at a position of 31.9 N 66.4W. How do I do that in this new version. It was easy before - I would touch in the approximate area, select Distance and Planning, drop a second waypoint then drag the first waypoint to the exact position I wanted, using the very friendly box on the lower left which showed coordinates, bearing and distance for each waypoint. Then I could move the second waypoint. This is very frustrating. I will have to go back to paper charts and grib files. Your previous version was brilliant, now it’s useless for me.

@starweather2020 About which device do we talk about, please? iPad?
-
@Ondřej-Šutera Yes, I am using an iPad
-
@starweather2020
On IPad click on the map and move the map under the picker, click on Distance and planning. The first waypoint is added. Click on Show coord. to see it’s coordinates, then move the map to add the second waypoint….
It’s strange that the bearing from the second waypoint is missing.
EDIT: it’s because I did not finalise the position of the third waypoint. -
@Ondřej-Šutera
In fact there are 2 separate features without the possibility to switch from one to the other:- Distance&planning showing a route, with waypoints, distances and bearings.
- Route planner if you choose a mobile (car, boat, flight)
-
@idefix37 You can’t tell the position of the cross hairs for the first waypoint before you drop it. You can’t tell the bearing of #1 to # 2 until after you have dropped #2. You can’t move waypoints once you have placed them unless you select “boat”, after which you can’t add any waypoints or see the bearings. Yikes
-
@starweather2020
It is why I suggest to Windy to get the possibility to toggle between both feature. Now when you selected Boat you can’t switch back to the basic Distance&planning feature. -
What happened to the little pin drop you had that showed wind speed? Now there’s a target there that disappears after a few seconds. I can’t look at the wind graphics and the wind speed on the top of the page at the same time. Please make it go back to where it was before. I am not happy with your update either.

Aaahh windy is awesome i love this product. But my immediate reaction to this update was not positive. I prefer the old weather picker, the textual layer menu on the right hand side rather than the images, the « normal » sided menu hamburger..the new gui is clunky. Can we p’ease have the option of reverting to the old version?
Cheers, and I appreciate everyone working hard for this awesome app.
-
@idefix37 You are right that the switch button between these two sections would be ideal, I will discuss this with colleagues.

@Ondřej-Šutera do you know if there are any plans to undo this update and revert to the previous one?
