Horrible Update
-
Your software update you did in the past 18 hours is terrible. Please return distance and planning to where it was. It is unusable to me in the latest version. I supply weather Routing to sailors at sea and I can’t do it the way it is. Thank you. Trevor Richards

Hi @starweather2020, what exactly do you mean, please? We add this feature to all versions of apps, instead of having this only in our desktop version. Also this version is not anyhow significantly changed, so I would like to know what you mean exactly.
-
Thanks for the quick response. I use an IPad. When using distance and planning, I need to be able to accurately place the starting position in mid ocean at a particular lat and long coordinate. I don't see how I can move the starting point in the new version other than hit and miss until I get it right. I also need the distance and bearing between waypoints before I click on “add waypoint”, as it used to do. Now it’s just giving an accumulated total. I need to be able to delete any waypoint, not just the last one. I need to be able to move a previously placed waypoint. Your previous version worked perfectly for me, this one does not. I know the GGR yacht race used Windy, along with many other sailors and I know they will be equally disappointed in the way this version works.
Thanks for listening! -
I agree with most of your remarks.
But how was you able to use Route planner on iPad ? It was not available in the previous mobile app. -
I don’t use the route planning function, I do my own planning based on the sailor I’m helping, both his/her experience and boat characteristics.

I agree with starweather2020. Last update is not efficient and reduce the possibility to understand weather evolution.
1The pointer do not match with the positio choosen
2 the position chosen shows the Météo value not on the point (which should be the normal) but right on the top of the screen
3 the position chosen doesn’t remain permanent until I need but disappears after couple of second.
All of these are mistakes that you have to fix, please. Thank you. Vincenzo Napoli -
- How exactly do you mean this, please? When you move with the cross marker, you can point to any place on the map with high precision on certain zoom levels.
- Can you please explain this point with screenshots?
- If you mean disappearing of the cross marker, you can set this in settings. It can disappear after 3, 6, 9 and 12 seconds or never (Always on)
Please let me know about the details.

@starweather2020
Distance & planning shows now distances between waypoints and bearing. -
Well that’s the problem, the Distance and Planning feature is now useless. Wow, they really messed this up - if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!
-
@idefix37 You can do that in the next step, if you are in one of sections (Car/hike, Boat, VFR,...), you can move points add new ones and remove the old ones.
-
@starweather2020 Also if we talk about the update, there was no possibility to use the route planner on mobile devices, and now it is, so I am not sure if you talk about the changes of desktop route planner or anything else.
-
@Ondřej-Šutera
You are right. It is possible to add / remove a waypoint or to grab it when the mobile type has been selected. That’s perfect.
-
I’m sorry, I just don’t get the distance and planning on the new version. Let me tell you what I do and then maybe you can give me some advice of what I need to do on the new version.
I use an iPad.
I have a friend leaving Bermuda tomorrow heading for the Chesapeake Bay. I am helping him plan a route for his sailboat. Waypoint #1 will be just off Bermuda. There will be light wind so he will motor at 6 knots and because there is south west wind forecasted for later in the week, he will head due west. Waypoint #2 will be 144 miles at 270 degrees from #1.
Light wind on day two, but maybe enough to sail a bit. Distance covered day 2 about 120 miles at 270 degrees for waypoint #3. Then the next day a ssw wind so he will head up a bit to around 290 degrees for maybe 130 miles, for waypoint #4, based on the predicted wind speed. And so on…..
I do that for the whole forecast period and give him a course to steer……
Now, if I want to grab a waypoint along the track somewhere and fine tune it and drag it to a different position, I can’t. When placing a waypoint I can’t see the coordinates until after I place the waypoint and I can’t see the course from the last waypoint.
If I choose “boat” for the planner, yes I can drag waypoints around and delete waypoints, but I can’t add a waypoint . If I scroll the days forward with the route planner on, the weather map doesn’t change, and that’s useless for what I do.
It has just become way too cumbersome. I agree with other users that the graphics on the menu bar on the right are not good and the menu bar itself is too big.Overall I have loved Windy, and wind models are extremely accurate, especially the gfs for offshore, anywhere around the world. And an incredible amount of useful information available with all the layers. Thank you for providing a great website. If you could just revert the Distance and Planning to the previous version, or tell me what I am missing, or doing wrong, I would be grateful.
Thank you. -
@starweather2020
At the moment I would not recommend using Route planner on iPad because it is showing by a bug. The wind direction is not set to North up in the diagram :

You say your friend is leaving tomorrow. Do you have the possibility to use the route planner on a website, PC or Mac? -
I never have used the planner because it doesn’t work for what I do. I can make the latest update work on my iPad, but it takes 3 to 4 times longer and it is just dreadful to use. Hopefully they can fix this. Thanks for the feedback.
-
This is a screenshot I’m referring. If I am not wrong Wind direction in table and in the figure are 180° difference. What is the right one? Thank you for the other answers. Vincenzo Napoli -
@Ondřej-Šutera I also very dissapointed about the new user interface, can't find anything, and if I find it it'isnt works as before. This is a horrible update for me, I also don't want to re-learn everything. Please just simply revert, or I'll cancel my subscription.
-
@vincenzo
The right wind direction is that of the wind map, not in the table. There is a bug in the Route planner in the mobile app, not on the website, which needs to be fixed shortly. -
@idefix37
Thank you for your clarification and I hope the bug will be fixed soon because this functions sounds very useful.
Another question always regarding the same.
Is the table dinamic I mean, the Météo values refers to the time and the position on the route ?
Tls again. VN -

Yes, it is the main advantage of Route planner. It give the weather forecast along the route according to the time and to the position of the mobile on that route.
But the route planner in the app is different from the one on the website. In the mobile app it is a simplified feature.
