Windy 39 is here. Learn how to masterclass new features
-
Have you noticed a few changes in Windy? That's because we've released version 39, which introduces features to make Windy easier to use when you know how to use it. Therefore, we are providing a summary to make things easier for you.
Pin your favorite layers
We understand that not everyone uses 50 layers on Windy. That's why we've made your job easier, and now you can pin your favorite layers to have them at hand. Valid for both classic layers and items in "Display on map" section (webcams, airports, weather stations, etc.)
How to:
- Go to the menu on your mobile
- Hold your finger long on the layer or POI you want to pin
- Your layers/POIs are now available under the PIN icon
Explore the new, better, more powerful picker
The Picker is the centerpiece of the application in the new version of Windy. And that's why it has new features that will make Windy easier to use.
With the change of the picker, the positions of some instruments have changed. When you place the picker anywhere on the map, you can view the Detailed Forecast, Distance and planning, or the nearest Sounding measurement for a specific location in the picker menu on top (see the picture below).
What the new picker can do
- Preview items like webcams, airports, surf spots, weather stations, radiation stations, etc.
- Quickly update detailed forecasts when the picker changes position
- Show nearest Sounding measurements
- Work better for measurements and route planning (more on that below)
Set the Weather picker timer
The new Weather picker can either disappear from the map after a few seconds or it can be present permanently with the "Always on" option. You can decide what suits you the best in the settings:
- Open Settings
- Scroll to Autoclose the weather picker in:
- Choose available intervals 3 sec, 6 sec, 9 sec, 12 sec or Always on.
Immerse yourself in route planning. Now in the app
Route planer is a beloved feature, especially among pilots, sailors, or hikers.
- Place the picker where the route begins
- Click on "Distance and planning" in the top bar.
- Scroll to other checkpoints and click on "Add waypoint"
- At the last waypoint, click on "End measurement"
- Choose how you want to complete the journey. Choose between airplane (VFR or IFR), boat, walking, or driving.
- On the timeline, select the time you will start and, on the bottom left, your speed.
If you plan to go later, you can save the route to your favorites on the bottom right, where you can find it later (by clicking on your profile photo).
We're listening to feedback. Leave us a comment
If you've been using the new version for a few days, let us know what you think. We'd love you to add pictures and specific things and go in-depth with your feedback.
The new version of Windy changes the way you navigate Windy. We know the changes are challenging, but we hope that after a few days, you'll get used to it and love the new version for its simplicity.

@David-Polášek the app and the website in general became very powerful and more and more useful. I love windy.
What I really struggle with is how laggy the app in Android became. It is so frustrating.
I am running it in an s22 ultra and reinstalled it several times, but the issue is always there. Thing that for example I am not experiencing neither in iOS app nor the website.Am I the only one facing this? I would be very much interested in knowing if you're aware of it and are working on that.
Thanks a lot

@David-Polášek
I keep losing the date selection in the screen. For example, when I choose the layer temperature, the option to choose the date for the next 10 days disappears. Thus I can only see the 'now' and not the future. This does not change if I select another layer. It only returns after fully closing the app and restarting it. I am on the latest version of Windy and of Android. Do you have a solution? -
Thanks for 39!!!

I use Windy for sailing . I liked the earlier version
But now don't see a forecast when I make a selection. It makes the cross symbol where I want a forecast but where is the forecast. It only shows weather stations. Help please.

As you ask for comments ;)
i would love if you could set your favorite forecast model as standard!
If i klick on the widgets to get fullscreen the app uses the in the widget selected models great!
but if i klick directly on the app icon and also in the browser version which ist my startscreen ;) it is always ECMWF model and i dont use that.would be great if you could fix that pleaase!

@idefix37 awesome thank you!! been looking for so long for a solution haha😅

@vict90 Very laggy and slow now among other things I find vexing.
-
The update is garbage, widgets still broken
-
@David-Polášek in modalità scura del mio Cell. le temperature della località predefinita risultano chiare illeggibili
-
After the last update, you changed the weather picker to a plus and it can be closed after 3,6,9,12 seconds or never.
That was a bad change.
First, when I move the weather picker on the map, then the nearest weather station opens. I am not interested in that. And because of that, the movement of the map and the weather picker is slow and "heavy" on my tablet.
Let's say I want to check the temperature 5 days ahead on a certain spot, then the weather picker closes after 12 seconds. If I choose never, yes, then I can check the temperature days ahead. But the next time I open the windy app and I move the map, then the movement is slow and heavy, and I must go into settings and autoclose the weather picker. It was a lot easier to move the old weather picker, and to open/close it.
So this is a step backward. At least it should be possible to choose if I want to open all the weather stations or not. Now I prefer pc, not the tablet.
Samsung Galaxy Tab s6 Lite, Android 13, UI version 5.1.

The new layout and disappearing timeline make this a huge step backwards. I might get used to it if the timeline didn't get lost requiring exit and restart everytime.
-
Love the app and WIndy.com… best out there. I just wish you had a layer that displays heat-index and/or wind-chill.
-
@Rares agree. The widget on my Samsung A52s has taken a huge step backwards.

It’s a poor UI design to have the cross or whatever you are calling it, off in some random place on the screen. It’s not in the center and irritates me every time I use the app. Do you think it’s better to have a fixed point on the screen to see the conditions and have to scroll the map around instead?
The earlier versions allowed you to select any place on the map to see the wind. We are sailors and that’s what we want to see…the apps name is windy right? Let us select the point anywhere we want without moving the map!!

I've adapted to the new layout and features. My only request would be to have access to 3 or 6 months of radiosonde records, from the pull down list of radiosonde records. Thank you.
-
@vict90 It is more laggy and sometimes menu items disappear or don't work. The timeline disappears randomly. The former app was perfect. Not now. 😓
-
I don't like the new interface. With the old app it was pretty easy to get the predicted wind speeds at a given altitude and location. This has become an awkward task in the new app.

I love the new changes to the windy app! I have encountered problems with setting the webcam view when I attempt to add webcams in both the mobile app and desktop version. When I type in the name of the webcam view the loading icon contiuously rotates and no options appear (in contrast to the location search for setting the webcam location which contiues to function well). It appears as though this feature is broken. When will this helpful feature be fixed?
