Weather router refuses to route us due to changes made in update
-
Our highly respected weather router has refused to do any weather routing this coming season due to the updates that changed his plotting in the distance and planning feature.
He is willing to take on routing again if these changes are repaired.
Can you advise as to any work being done to rectify this?

@SV-Bertha
Regularly using the route planner on the windy.com website, I don't remember these problems you mention. Do you have detailed information about it? -
We have used a real person for our weather routing- highly experienced, world sailor who has routed us from Maine to the Caribbean multiple times. He managed incredible conditions, VERY accurately.
He reports that midway through a group he was routing the Windy system upgraded and he could no longer plot assumed future positions with any level of accuracy.
He is deeply concerned about having us off shore from the Canaries to the Caribbean this fall without his previous level of accuracy in this area.
If it is not corrected we lose an incredibly valuable resource and will cancel our pro level.

This person should explain here on the community forum what issues he encountered and how the accuracy of the route planner is supposed to have decreased. It would be useful if he told us about this so-called inaccuracy.
The weather model used in the route planner has not been downgraded. I do not sail in the Caribbean but I have not seen the ECMWF model decrease in forecast accuracy. It is still the best overall model. However, global weather models do not perform at the same level everywhere.
“If it is not corrected, we lose a precious resource” What correction should be made? -
@idefix37 he has-
starweather2020
@STARWEATHER2020Multiple descriptions noted as "Horrible Update"
He has also emailed the issues directly to Windy- with the same response "there are no issues".
Yet he reports the new version does not allow the same accuracy following the newest upgrade done by Windy.
Again- the issue is the newest version does not have the same accuracy in plotting future positioning.
This is not a "Caribbean issue", he has routed boats through out the Atlantic Ocean from Newfoundland to the Caribbean for decades, and very specifically had the system functioning differently from one day to the next day when routing a number of boats.
I am here because he said he did not receive any adequate response or solution, and he can not confidently route us for a long passage like the Canaries to Caribbean.
We trust him implicitly and do not want to make a passage without his skills- he feels winged by the Windy changes so I want him to have his tools back.
-
When I questioned Star Weather again he said-
"the ECMWF weather model is really good- it is the way you drop waypoints that changed and is the problem"Is there anyway to make the way the waypoints drop that can go back to the previous version?

@SV-Bertha
OK I see now what you mean and the long discussion about the Distance&planning tool he used before the update. Now it is not possible to use it on iPad in the same way as before. BTW the tool is not modified on desktop / laptop.
It is not a question of the plotting accuracy. The tool is still accurate when you plot the route, but if you want to change and adjust waypoint position you loose the position information i.e. coordinates.
Hope there is a solution in near future. -
Is there a way to find out if this is something that Windy programing has on their radar- if they are working on a solution?
-
@SV-Bertha Hi, we have already been testing some new functionalities in the route planner on mobile devices.
-
It's frustrating to encounter issues with our weather router after an update, especially when it refuses to route us due to changes made. Updates are meant to improve things, but sometimes they can introduce unexpected problems.
-
@cewodal660 Yes- I can't even fathom the complexity and details involved in the programing of something like Windy.
Since the issue has been very precisely described- I would think it is a reasonable request to have it repaired.
-
@Ondřej-Šutera is there a timeline for when these might be updated?
-
@cewodal660
The route planner was not available in the mobile app, so there is no reason for you to be frustrated. It is a new feature in on phone or tablet.
What has been changed is the Distance & planning tool, as explained here above. -
@idefix37 again- we just want to be able to have our trusted weather router get us safely across the ocean. He needs the distance and planning tool to be as it was previously. Is this something that can be done?
-
@SV-Bertha I think that the update should be available in a few weeks for mobile apps, this week in the web app.

@Ondřej-Šutera WONDERFUL NEWS!!!
