How do I set my location without turning on location services?
-
I want to set my location manually. I don’t use location services. How do I do that (to set the location manually)? The Windy App and Windy Widget seem to revert to my IP address which is more than 100 miles from where I live. Thank you for your help. A premium member.

@wnlewis You can manually set your location as a favorite one and then use this favorite location as a start up location in your settings.
-
@Ondřej-Šutera I have done that, but the app and the widget choose my IP address, Garden City, Kansas, about 200 miles to the west.
-
@wnlewis Have you tried going into your app and changing "Start-up location" to a favourite? I think this particular setting isn't universal over all devices.
-
@Wheats I don’t have that option. I’m running an iPhone with 15.7.8 on an IPhone that can’t upgrade to 16.
-
@wnlewis Then unfortunately you might be out of luck - @Ondřej-Šutera can you confirm when that functionality came to the app?
-
@Wheats We supported all iOS versions from version 14 right now with all features, so this shouldn't be any issue.
-
@Ondřej-Šutera Then I would suggest that the problem is “operator error” (which is what I hope), or, I really am asking for something that can’t be done.
-
@wnlewis I am not sure, if we understand each other, since you mentioned widgets as well and these have the location setup elsewhere, specifically in their settings.
Then you want to have your selected location as a startup one, when you launch the app, am I right? I tested the function on my iOS device, so I move the city into my favorite list then visit settings, set the default location to this city from the list, turn off and on the app and the city shows up.
-
@wnlewis where may I get instruction about how to fix this problem? You may have indeed told me but I am not understanding. My widget still shows the wrong location. Thank you.
-
@wnlewis If you want to set the location of widget, you have to visit the settings of the widget, it is usually done by long tap on the widget.
-
@Ondřej-Šutera trying that. It seems stuck on Dodge City or Ness City and I entered Newton, Kansas. It refuses to acknowledge that name. The map for this area of Kansas is lacking any information.
-
@wnlewis Sorry, if I had an apple device I would send some screenshots for you.
-
you have to have the location you want set as a favourite.
-
in the app, you have to change the settings on the mobile app to "Startup location" - whichever favourite you have.
-
for the widget to show your wanted location, you have to change the settings of the widget itself to your desired location.
On my Samsung Galaxy S20 I can long press the widget on the screen, and select settings. Then I can click a dropdown box to select the location I want the widget to show me. I then make sure I click "Update Widget" before closing the widget settings.
When you select the widget in order to open the app - it will open with whatever location you have selected in the widget settings.
When you select the app icon in order to open the app - it will open whatever location you have selected in the app. -
-
@wnlewis Ness City continues to show up with the name, a blue dot with a white ring around it with a directional arrow for the wind and the temperature in Ness City. My favorite, Newton, shows as a small yellow heart icon, no name, no direction, no temperature.
-
@wnlewis Do you see this in the radar layer, am I right?
-
@Ondřej-Šutera Correct. And it is the default layer for both the Widget and the App, regardless of how I set the preferences. P.S. Is there some way to get email notification activated? I do not look that often at the community. Thanks!
-
@wnlewis Yes, you can set email notifications about messages here on Community in your profile settings, if you click on your icon in the top right corner.
According to blue dot in the app, you cannot adjust this.
It is default setup of radar layer, however, you can adjust the location used in widgets by the long tap on the widget.
In the screenshot, my device has Czech language but the first option offer changing the location in the widget, as you can see the location on the second row. -
@Ondřej-Šutera Do you have a list of the radar locations used by Windy? I would like to pick something closer to Newton, Kansas, if possible. Ness City is 322 Km to the west and Kansas City, is 300 Km north-east. I entered Wichita, Kansas, which has National Weather Service radar - I think- but it does not appear to be used by Windy. Thanks for your help.
-
@wnlewis We don't have any list, but if you see the location displayed with the lighter grey background color and data in the app, you can use this location in widgets.
