Windy brings a real-time global lightning strikes tracking
-
Windy has been buzzing with activity recently, tirelessly innovating to enhance your experience. This time, we're focusing on something that strikes—quite literally—lightning.⚡️
Collaborating with industry experts to bring you yet another game-changing layer, we've partnered with Nowcast.de, a worldwide lightning detection provider.
”If you have a comprehensive overview of the lightning strikes situation, you have a very good overview of the weather situation.”* Richard Fellner, CEO of Nowcast.
As a result of this collaboration, we’re able to present you with a lightning strike overlay for Weather radar and Satellite that shows real-time lightning activity right in your vicinity. And again, the lightning detection layer is totally free for everyone!
See our short video with a few words from Richard Fellner, the CEO of Nowcast:
Coverage? It's global!
We are proud to say that the coverage of the lightning detection network is GLOBAL.
However, there are still a few limitations. Marginal coverage is over the Pacific Ocean, the eastern part of the Indian Ocean, the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean, and the southern part of Argentina.
Why is lightning detection important?
Access to high-quality lightning information offers invaluable benefits for both professional and everyday users. For professionals like pilots, glider pilots, and sailors, precise data on approaching thunderstorms is crucial for ensuring safety and making informed navigational decisions.
Meanwhile, everyday users also stand to gain significantly; accurate storm warnings allow them to seek shelter in a timely manner and take steps to safeguard their property.
💡 Quality meets accuracy. The moment a lightning strike hits the ground, it's reflected on the Windy map with a maximum delay measured in mere seconds.

Exciting yes it was untill I had a look at my country,South Africa, and saw that we are not covered by the Nowcasting service. Oversight or a thing for the future?
Attached image shows lightning activity now (circled)
answer by return mail plz, -
@Korina awesome improvement!
-
I’m very excited about this and the ability to overlay lightning on satellite; however, I am not seeing the lightning layer at all now. Does it need to be activated somehow?
-
Hi! doesn't work in southern South America (Argentina).
-
@EzeStorm It also doesn't work in Uruguay
-
-
@otti-0 I can't see anything. (premium)
-
@inAjet Hi, can you please provide further info about the device you use to access Windy?
@Dawson-Pointers @EzeStorm Could you please check the rest of the World? Is it okay in other locations or the issue persists elsewhere as well?
-
Dear @reenvalsa, thank you for info. We will inspect this. May I know what service are you using for comparison - where is the screenshot coming from?
-
It doesn't appear to be working in Southeast Brazil, both on Windows 10 (Firefox) and android
-
Hi! @Ondřej-Šutera. Yes, the rest of the globe works fine. apparently doesn't work in southern South America and some portions of the southern hemisphere.
-
@Ondřej-Šutera this is on an iPhone 14 Pro. The app is the most up-do-date version. I have compared global areas of live lightning activity on the desktop and iPad versions with the iPhone app, and can confirm it is only missing on the iPhone - in both radar and satellite views.
-
@Ondřej-Šutera update: I reinstalled the app on my iPhone and the lightning is displayed again; however, this should not be a requirement. There must be some issue chasing the new lightning data to not be displayed on some devices.
-
@EzeStorm @zDavzBR We are aware of certain locations that are still in progress and the southern part of South America is one of them, unfortunately.
@inAjet Thank you for letting us know. You are right that necessary reinstall shouldn't be required, however, I am glad it is solved for you. Can you please let us know, if you meet any other issue? We have been monitoring the whole situation.

As already mentioned, I love the addition of the lightning data to the satellite layer. This is a powerful tool to further analyze the intensity of weather displayed by the radar and/or satellite imagery.
Would you consider adding the ability to control the lightning layer separately from the radar/satellite layer? There may be times when you want to de-clutter the display and view radar/satellite data only, or view lightning data only to quickly locate the most active weather.
Thank you for all your hard work to make this the most capable mobile weather platform on the market!!!
-
Thanks for bringing this feature now, I was waiting for this for a long time...
But as others have already pointed out, South of Brazil does not have any lightning...
Hope you can fix it soon, thanks.Lightning map

@EzeStorm The way I see it, the lightning layer works in northern South America and the Americas, Western Europe, a little bit of Asia, and maybe Australia. It works in the Caribbean Sea, parts of the Atlantic and East Pacific. Yes, it doesn't work in much of the Southern Hemisphere. Now tonight, I notice the lightning layer has stopped working completely at this time. Recently it wasn't working and it turned out they got rid of the old lightning service and put in the nowcast service, which WAS working fine. Why wouldn't it work NOW?
-
@weatherfan Hi, do you have any issue with new layers right now? We are aware that certain parts of the World are missing, but we communicate this with the source and it should get better soon.
-
@weatherfan Update: The lightning layer is back to working normally.
